A tragic case of alleged police brutality has surfaced in Kwara State, as a 35-year-old man, Tunji Jimoh, reportedly lost his life under suspicious circumstances while in police detention in Ilorin. According to reliable sources, Tunji, a resident of the Erubu/Asunnara community, was arrested on Friday over a debt of ₦220,000 owed to a friend, whose brother is a police officer. Following his arrest, he was taken to the Special Investigation Bureau (SIB) at the Kwara State Police Command. Family members revealed that Tunji was denied bail and left in custody late on Friday. By Saturday morning, they were informed of his sudden death. A source alleges that Tunji may have been tortured in detention as part of a deal involving the creditor and some officers. Confirming the incident, the police spokesperson, DSP Ejire-Adeyemi Toun, stated in a press release on Sunday:“The state police command is aware of an unfortunate incident that led to the tragic death of one Mr. Jimoh Abdulquadri, which occurred on December 20, 2024. The deceased was invited on an alleged case of obtaining money by false pretence to the tune of ₦220,000. Discreet investigations have commenced, and updates will be shared as the case progresses. No stone will be left unturned.” The circumstances surrounding Tunji’s death have raised concerns about possible police misconduct. Human rights advocates are calling for transparency and accountability in the ongoing investigation to ensure justice is served. The incident occurred a few days after the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL)-owned and operated East Wind Aviation’s helicopter crashed among the Rivers State capital’s waterways. The wreckage of the helicopter that crashed in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has been found, according to the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB). Bimbo Oladeji, the Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance for the NSIB, says as much. “The allied team and partners leading the charge for the search and recovery efforts of the ditched Sikorsky SK76 helicopter, registration 5N BQG, have located its wreckage,” she said in a statement late Thursday, according to the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB). Eight people were on board the Eastwind Aviation-operated chopper when it crashed in the October 24, 2024, Atlantic Ocean near Bonny Finima. The wreckage was discovered during last night’s recovery dives, just 0.775 nautical miles from the FPSO Adoon, according to the NSIB. With coordinates of latitude 04° 13.634′ N and longitude 008° 19.442′ E, it was 42 meters below the surface. Currently, efforts are being made to collect the wreckage of the helicopter. Today, the helicopter’s tail boom has already been successfully recovered and raised out of the sea. Following the action, NSIB Director General Alex Badeh Jr. praised the recovery efforts of the partners and allied team. “Finding the wreckage is a crucial step in our investigation into the circumstances of this terrible accident,” he stated. “The commitment and collaboration demonstrated by all parties concerned have been outstanding, and we are committed to carrying out a comprehensive inquiry to give the families of those impacted clarity and closure. The agency reports that more efforts are underway to collect the wreckage.
