NOMAL Advocates Balanced Leadership in Nigeria The Northern Minority Alliance for Balanced Leadership (NOMAL) recently convened for a three-day retreat in Jos, Plateau State. During the event, the group’s convener, Ibrahim Bunu, spoke with Isaac Shobayo about NOMAL’s stance on key national issues, including tax reform, political restructuring, and the upcoming 2027 elections. Northern Minorities Reject Northern Agenda Bunu emphasized that Northern minorities do not align with the so-called “Northern Agenda,” which he believes fails to represent their interests. He stated, “We, the minorities in the North, stand firmly with a leader committed to balanced governance, inclusivity, and national unity.” He criticized certain groups claiming to represent Northern interests, asserting that their motives are driven by personal gains rather than collective progress. Bunu praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for its proactive policies, especially regarding insurgency management and restoring relative peace in Northern regions. Tax Reform and Regional Leadership When asked about the North’s position on the Federal Government’s Tax Reform Bills, Bunu clarified that dissenting voices, including those of Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, do not represent Northern minorities. “The governor of Bauchi State is speaking for himself, not for us. We have not mandated him to represent Northern minorities.” Bunu reiterated NOMAL’s commitment to supporting President Tinubu’s administration, dismissing claims that certain governors or political groups speak for the entire North. Regrouping Political Forces: A Threat to 2027? Addressing concerns about political regrouping in preparation for the 2027 elections, Bunu expressed confidence in Tinubu’s growing popularity in the North. “The 2027 election will be a one-way traffic. Those plotting alliances are wasting their energy. Nigerians now understand their political gimmicks.” Bunu highlighted that the Northern minorities are united in their support for policies fostering equity, inclusivity, and development. Appointments and Regional Representation On allegations of lopsided appointments favoring the South, Bunu countered that the North holds key positions in the current administration. “Sensitive roles such as the National Security Adviser and Chief of Defence Staff are held by Northerners. President Tinubu’s leadership reflects fairness and inclusivity.” Bunu further noted that this administration has prioritized economic recovery, infrastructure development, and addressing longstanding issues like refinery operations. Changing Allegiances in the North Reflecting on the 2023 elections, Bunu acknowledged that Northern minorities initially supported Labour Party candidate Peter Obi due to concerns over a Muslim-Muslim ticket. However, he explained the shift in allegiance: “President Tinubu has demonstrated that religion is not a factor in his governance. Many who supported Obi have now rallied behind Tinubu.” Bunu also urged Mr. Obi to reconsider his 2027 presidential ambitions and work collaboratively with the current administration. Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has raised concerns over President Bola Tinubu’s proposed tax reform bills, warning that the legislation could lead to regional imbalance and unrest in Nigeria. He described the reforms as unfavorable to northern Nigeria and urged the presidency to reconsider. Speaking on Thursday at the Government House in Bauchi while addressing the Christian community, Mohammed expressed his dissatisfaction with the bills currently being debated in the National Assembly. He argued that the proposed reforms are disproportionately designed to benefit a specific part of the country while neglecting the needs of the northern region.
