On Sunday, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike caused a major embarrassment to Indian Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, during his state visit to Nigeria. Wike, visibly intoxicated, greeted Modi at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, presenting him with the key to the city. After a brief photo session, Wike, under the influence of alcohol, began slurring his words while attempting to converse with the Prime Minister. As Modi proceeded toward his convoy, Wike continued to follow, stumbling and slurring, which made the Indian leader visibly uncomfortable. Security personnel from both Nigerian and Indian teams quickly intervened and escorted Modi to his vehicle. The incident quickly made its way to Aso Rock, prompting immediate action. President Bola Tinubu has presented the Grand Commander of the Order of Niger (GCON), Nigeria’s second-highest national honour, to India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Abuja. This ceremony took place during ongoing discussions between Nigeria and India at the Presidential Villa. The GCON is a prestigious award, ranking just below the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR), which is typically reserved for Nigeria’s presidents. Prime Minister Modi arrived in Abuja on Saturday evening for a visit aimed at strengthening bilateral ties. President Tinubu expressed that the agreement reached during the visit would promote “mutual respect and a shared mission” between the two nations. Modi’s visit marks the first by an Indian prime minister to Nigeria in nearly 20 years. On Sunday morning, President Tinubu formally welcomed Modi to Aso Rock, where the Indian national anthem was played in his honour, followed by a ceremonial parade by the Brigade of Guards.
