The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that it will officially lift the restriction on public political campaigns on Wednesday ahead of the Ekiti State governorship election scheduled for June 20, 2026. The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Ekiti State, Dr. Bunmi Omoseyindemi, disclosed that all political parties cleared to participate in the election would be permitted to begin their campaign activities starting from January 21, 2026. He further explained that all forms of political campaigning must cease by midnight on June 18, 2026, in line with electoral guidelines. Dr. Omoseyindemi made this announcement on Tuesday during a stakeholders’ engagement held in Ado-Ekiti. At the meeting, he emphasized the need for discipline, mutual respect, and peaceful conduct among political parties throughout the campaign period as preparations intensify for the governorship poll. The stakeholders’ meeting was attended by senior INEC officials, alongside leaders and representatives of the political parties cleared to contest in the election. The gathering served as a platform to outline expectations and reinforce compliance with electoral laws. This development came less than 24 hours after INEC released the final list of governorship candidates and their respective running mates representing the 12 political parties approved to take part in the June 20 election. It will be recalled that both the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Social Democratic Party (SDP), whose candidates were not included in the published list, had earlier disclosed that they were pursuing legal action. According to the parties, the court cases were aimed at securing judicial relief that would enable their participation in the election. According to Dr. Omoseyindemi, the release of the final candidates’ list signifies a crucial stage in the electoral calendar and signals the formal transition into active political campaigning. He explained that following the completion of party primaries, the submission of nomination documents, and the resolution of disputes arising from the nomination process, INEC proceeded to publish the final list of candidates and their running mates. He noted that this action was carried out strictly in accordance with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022 governing elections in Nigeria. The REC stressed that the commencement of campaigns marks a sensitive and important phase that demands restraint, responsibility, and strict observance of the law by all political stakeholders. He further stated that peaceful campaigns are fundamental to achieving a credible election outcome and maintaining stability within Ekiti State. He reiterated INEC’s firm commitment to organizing a transparent, credible, and violence-free governorship election. Dr. Omoseyindemi urged all political parties to conduct their campaigns responsibly and in full compliance with the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the Electoral Act 2022, as well as the Code of Conduct for Political Parties and Campaign Activities. He warned that any breach of campaign regulations or actions capable of disrupting public order would be met with appropriate sanctions as provided by law. The REC specifically cautioned political actors against engaging in hate speech, provocative rhetoric, misinformation, and personal attacks. He advised parties to avoid actions that could incite violence, intimidate opponents, or obstruct lawful political activities. Additionally, he called on political parties to strictly observe approved campaign venues, designated routes, and stipulated timelines. He emphasized the responsibility of parties to ensure that their supporters and campaign agents behave peacefully during all activities. Dr. Omoseyindemi also advised political parties to notify security agencies and relevant authorities ahead of rallies, marches, and other campaign events. He assured stakeholders that INEC, working closely with security agencies and other partners, would actively monitor campaign activities across the state to ensure compliance. He appealed to political parties to set positive examples, urged the media to uphold responsible journalism, and called on traditional rulers and community leaders to continue promoting peace within their respective communities. Reacting to the commencement of the campaign period, the Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State, Segun Dipe, stated that the party intended to focus on issue-based campaigning. According to him, the APC would highlight the performance of Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s administration, particularly in the areas of governance, infrastructure development, workers’ welfare, and political stability across the state. He expressed confidence that the achievements recorded under the Oyebanji-led government had earned the ruling party broad acceptance among residents of Ekiti State, adding that the APC was optimistic about securing victory in the forthcoming election. In contrast, the Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the state, Segun Akinwumi, said the party was fully prepared to engage in peaceful and issue-driven campaigns. He claimed that voters in Ekiti were determined to use their votes to express dissatisfaction with what he described as years of underperformance by the APC and to pursue a new political direction for the state. Akinwumi maintained that increasing public discontent with the Oyebanji administration would reflect at the polls, predicting that support would translate into votes for the ADC governorship candidate, Ambassador Dare Bejide, during the June 20 election.
At least six students returning to their place of study have been reported dead following a tragic boat accident on the Buruku River in Buruku Local Government Area of Benue State. Information obtained by LMSINT MEDIA revealed that the incident occurred on Monday night when the wooden boat conveying the students suddenly capsized while navigating the river. A community source who spoke with journalists on Tuesday explained that the boat was overloaded with passengers, a situation believed to have contributed directly to the accident. An eyewitness, identified as a maritime worker who was present at the riverside but requested anonymity, disclosed that passengers were made to delay their crossing earlier in the day. According to him, the delay happened because politicians returning from a church thanksgiving service in Logo were given priority to be ferried across the river. He stated that attempts were made to stop other passengers from boarding so that the governor and members of his entourage could cross first. This delay, he said, forced many of the stranded passengers, including students, to attempt the crossing later at night. The eyewitness explained that darkness had already set in by the time the remaining passengers eventually boarded the boat. Despite the large number of people onboard, the vessel proceeded on its journey. According to his account, the boat capsized midway through the journey due to excessive loading. While many of the passengers were rescued during the incident, six students reportedly drowned. As of the time of the report, five bodies had been recovered, while rescue teams continued searching for one remaining missing victim. Another eyewitness who confirmed the incident also attributed the tragedy to severe overloading. He revealed that the boat was carrying more than 45 passengers, in addition to vehicles, at the time of the accident. A family member of one of the victims, Pastor Jethro Moor, identified the deceased as students from Gbeji in Ukum Local Government Area. He said they were traveling back to Gboko to resume school activities when the accident occurred. Pastor Moor further disclosed that the boat was transporting two vehicles loaded with food supplies alongside over 20 passengers. He explained that the excessive weight made the boat unstable, especially given the current state of the river. He added that ongoing bridge construction around the area had significantly narrowed the navigable channel, making it difficult for boats to maintain balance when overloaded. According to him, the vessel could not withstand the pressure under such conditions. The Chairman of Buruku Local Government Area, Raymond Zege Aondoakura, confirmed the incident to journalists on Tuesday. He stated that security agencies had taken over the situation and that rescue operations were still ongoing along the river. When asked to confirm the exact number of casualties, Aondoakura declined to give details, stating that official figures would be released after the police completed their investigation. Reacting to the development, the Benue State Commissioner for Marine and Blue Economy, Dennis Iyaghigba, expressed deep concern over the tragic incident. He described the accident as a painful reminder of the risks associated with unsafe and poorly regulated river transportation. In a statement issued by his media aide, Lubem Gena, the commissioner announced that a comprehensive investigation had been initiated. The probe, he said, would examine both the immediate and underlying causes of the accident, including potential breaches of safety guidelines. He also conveyed the state government’s condolences to the families of the victims and to residents of the Buruku community affected by the tragedy. Meanwhile, the spokesperson of the Benue State Police Command, Udeme Edet, disclosed that the command had not yet received an official report regarding the incident. The Buruku River remains a critical water route in the state, serving as a shortcut for movement between local government areas such as Logo and parts of Ukum. Due to the absence of a functional bridge, residents rely heavily on boats for daily transportation across the river. Over the years, successive governments, including past military administrations, have made repeated commitments to construct a bridge across the Buruku River. The Federal Government has outlined a proposed total expenditure of N87.31bn for the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development and its affiliated agencies in the 2026 Appropriation Bill, with a clear emphasis placed on capital investment. A detailed review of the budget proposal indicates that N70.19bn, accounting for over 80 per cent of the total allocation, has been designated for capital expenditure. This allocation reflects a strong infrastructure-driven approach by the government. In comparison, N14.78bn has been allocated for personnel costs, while N2.34bn is set aside to cover overhead expenses across the ministry and its agencies. Notably, the budget documentation does not include any provisions for retained independent revenue, donor support, or aid and grant funding, meaning the proposed spending relies entirely on direct government allocation. Among the beneficiaries, the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development itself received the largest share of the funding, with a total allocation of N50.65bn. Out of this amount, N48.55bn is dedicated to capital projects aimed at infrastructure development and sector upgrades. Personnel costs for the ministry are estimated at N1.35bn, while N745.74m has been earmarked for overhead expenses. The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) is set to receive a total allocation of N11.84bn. A significant portion of this sum, N9.15bn, is assigned to personnel costs, underscoring the agency’s labour-intensive operational structure. Overhead costs stand at N393.73m, while N2.29bn has been allocated for capital expenditure. Similarly, the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT), Zaria, is projected to receive N11.28bn in total funding. The breakdown includes N4.28bn for personnel costs, N464.44m for overheads, and N6.54bn allocated specifically for capital projects, supporting infrastructure expansion and training capacity. The Nigeria Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has been allocated N6.3bn, with the entire amount dedicated exclusively to capital expenditure. The budget framework shows no provision for either personnel or overhead costs for the agency within this allocation. In the same vein, the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) is expected to receive N7.24bn. Of this amount, N6.51bn is allocated for capital projects, while N734.09m is assigned to overhead expenses. Similar to NAMA, the budget does not include any allocation for personnel costs for the bureau. The pronounced focus on capital spending aligns closely with the long-standing position of the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, who has repeatedly stressed that infrastructure renewal is essential for enhancing aviation safety, operational efficiency, and service delivery within the sector. On 22 January 2025, the ministry formally presented its 2025 budget proposal to the Joint National Assembly Committee on Aviation and Aviation Technology at the National Assembly Complex. During this engagement, the minister reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to transparency and accountability in the utilisation of public funds. Keyamo also provided lawmakers with a performance review of the ministry’s 2024 budget implementation. According to his presentation, capital expenditure recorded a utilisation rate of 30.9 per cent, while personnel costs achieved full utilisation at 100 per cent. Overhead spending similarly showed near-complete execution, reaching 99.97 per cent. The minister further explained that the ministry’s proposed 2025 budget of N71.12bn reflects clearly defined strategic priorities aimed at advancing Nigeria’s aviation and aerospace development agenda. The proposal comprised N69.22bn for capital expenditure, N1.16bn for personnel costs, and N745.74m allocated to overheads. According to Keyamo, the capital-heavy nature of the budget structure is intentionally designed to drive infrastructure upgrades, improve service delivery standards, and reinforce safety oversight mechanisms across the aviation sector.

On Thursday night, October 10, 2024, I joined several aviation correspondents from different Nigerian media organisations on an assignment to Murtala Muhammed International Airport Terminal 2 in Lagos. The purpose of the visit was to cover the inaugural direct flight operated by Neos Airline into Nigeria. The arrival ceremony was originally scheduled to commence at 9:30 p.m., coinciding with the aircraft’s expected touchdown. However, unforeseen operational delays altered the plan. The aircraft eventually landed at approximately 11:30 p.m., barely thirty minutes to midnight. Rather than leave the airport after the coverage, I made a personal decision to stay back. It was my first time remaining at the facility so late into the night, and I wanted to observe the atmosphere of the airport after most travellers and staff had departed. As the terminal gradually emptied and people headed home, I felt the experience was incomplete. I chose to spend the night within the airport premises. I spent hours moving around the terminal halls. When fatigue finally set in and I considered resting, a junior staff member of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria noticed my colleague and me. He kindly offered us a more comfortable seat where we could sit. During that quiet moment, my colleague, whom I will refer to as Dare for anonymity, began sharing stories of unusual and dramatic encounters he had witnessed over time at the airport. According to him, many of the most memorable episodes involved passengers and airline officials, particularly in situations where flights were missed. That night, we were seated opposite the Royal Air Maroc service desk. The Moroccan national carrier had earlier completed its direct flight operation into Lagos and its staff were already closing operations for the night when a woman rushed into the terminal. She was desperate to board the airline, even though the boarding process had officially ended and the gate had been shut. Ground handling personnel firmly informed her that she had arrived too late and that the flight could no longer accommodate her. What followed was an unexpected and emotional reaction. The woman sat directly on the terminal floor and began speaking loudly in pidgin English, drawing the attention of everyone around. She repeatedly claimed that unseen forces from her hometown had followed her to the airport and ruined her opportunity to travel abroad. She removed her cap and pleaded with anyone within sight to help appeal to the airline staff still present in the early hours of the morning. Her distress escalated as she alternated between shouting religious exclamations and blaming her “village people,” insisting they were spiritually responsible for her predicament. When her appeals failed, she redirected her anger toward a nearby security officer, questioning why he was laughing while she cried. The situation attracted laughter from onlookers, making the episode both uncomfortable and pitiful. Wanting clarity, I approached the woman and tried to understand the issue calmly. I asked her to relax and explain what had gone wrong. She responded that she had spent nearly two years saving money to travel, after her sister refused to sponsor her journey to Morocco. According to her, once she finally gathered the funds, she was informed that she had arrived too late for the flight. I explained that missing a flight did not permanently end her chances of travelling and advised her to speak with airline officials for rescheduling. She complained that the staff were hostile and had even threatened physical action against her. I suggested accompanying her to speak with them. With the assistance of the officials, discussions were held regarding her placement on a subsequent flight. That conversation effectively resolved the incident. Scenes similar to this play out regularly across Nigerian airports. However, occurrences at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos are notably more frequent and intense due to its status as the country’s busiest aviation hub. From the moment passengers arrive, they are confronted with a military checkpoint. Minor misunderstandings at this point often escalate into heated verbal exchanges between travellers and security officers, particularly involving female passengers. Moving toward the terminal entrance, especially at Terminal 2, experienced travellers usually proceed without difficulty. First-time passengers, however, often pause to ask for directions. At this vulnerable stage, some fall victim to individuals posing as helpers, who eventually collect money under misleading claims. Just beyond the entrance, travellers place their luggage on scanning machines that display bag contents on monitors viewed by security personnel. Despite this screening process, Customs officers frequently demand additional manual inspections. In several instances, passengers are still pressured for money. Complaints against Customs personnel have intensified over time. One particularly troubling incident involved an officer demanding duty payments for clothing and perfume that a passenger identified as personal belongings. The officer reportedly requested the payment be made into a personal account with a modern commercial bank. In many situations, refusal to comply with extortion attempts leads to intentional delays, which often erupt into dramatic confrontations within the terminal. Over the years, the leadership of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has attempted to address these challenges. However, corruption has remained persistent. Investigations revealed that FAAN sought intervention from the Office of the National Security Adviser, although progress from that engagement appears limited. In November of the previous year, following public criticism by Senator Osita Izunaso, who described conditions at Nigerian airports as a “national embarrassment” due to touting and begging, FAAN introduced a wide-ranging reform agenda aimed at improving passenger experience across major terminals. Details of these reforms were outlined in an internal document titled Position Document on Measures to Address Corrupt Practices and Enhance Passenger Experience at MMIA and GAT. The document bore the signature of the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo. The son of the Oniwo of Afin, Oba Simeon Olanipekun, who was abducted by armed men in the Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, has been released after a ransom of ₦20 million was paid to his abductors. The victim, identified as Olaolu, is a serving member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). He regained his freedom on Monday following prolonged negotiations between the family and the kidnappers. Despite his release, his father, the traditional ruler, and other abducted individuals are still being held by the assailants. A family source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the development on Tuesday. According to the source, Olaolu was freed after intense discussions and financial demands from the kidnappers were met. The source explained that after the ransom was delivered, the kidnappers released the prince at a herders’ settlement located around Oreke, within the same Ifelodun Local Government Area. From that location, he was transported to the military base in Oreke, where security personnel contacted his family. Following his release, Olaolu was taken to an undisclosed medical facility. The family disclosed that he is currently undergoing treatment due to the physical injuries and psychological distress he experienced during captivity. Meanwhile, Oba Simeon Olanipekun, the Oniwo of Afin, remains in captivity alongside other residents who were abducted during the same incident. The kidnappers are reportedly demanding an additional ₦15 million as ransom for the release of the monarch and the remaining victims. Negotiations are said to be ongoing, as the family and concerned parties continue efforts to secure the freedom of those still held.

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, on Tuesday officially unveiled the Laderin–Professor Wole Soyinka Train Station Road in Abeokuta, the state capital, while also revealing plans to commission 20 additional road projects across different parts of the state. The governor explained that the upcoming road inaugurations are part of activities lined up to commemorate Ogun State’s 50th anniversary, scheduled for February 2026. Ogun State was created on February 13, 1976, during the military administration of the late General Murtala Muhammed, alongside states such as Oyo, Ondo, Benue, Bauchi, Borno, Imo, and Niger. Speaking during the inauguration ceremony, Governor Abiodun disclosed that construction work is advancing steadily on the Sagamu Interchange–Papalanto–Opele Road, describing the project as a 100-kilometre strategic East–West highway designed to enhance connectivity within the state. According to him, the highway is expected to serve as a major alternative route for motorists once completed, reducing traffic pressure on Abeokuta while improving access to other parts of the country. He added that the road would also unlock new economic opportunities by opening up previously underserved corridors for commercial activities. The governor further highlighted the importance of the project, describing it as a key pillar of the state’s ongoing infrastructure renewal efforts. He explained that the road runs from Sagamu Interchange through Papalanto to Opele, covering approximately 100 kilometres in total length. Governor Abiodun revealed that the road had been fully shut to allow for comprehensive reconstruction. He noted that within the Sagamu Interchange to Papalanto axis, which spans about 40 kilometres, nearly 25 kilometres have already been rebuilt using reinforced concrete, a method chosen to ensure durability and long-term performance. He added that once the project is completed, vehicles transporting goods and services from Ota, Ifo, and Ewekoro would no longer need to pass through the Abeokuta–Sagamu Expressway. Instead, they would be able to connect directly to Papalanto and access the expressway, easing congestion and improving logistics efficiency. Governor Abiodun also described the Professor Wole Soyinka Train Station as a significant transportation landmark that links Ogun State to Lagos, Oyo State, and northern Nigeria. He noted that Ogun State hosts five functional train stations, a development that reflects the state’s strategic position in Nigeria’s broader economic and transportation framework. He explained that although access roads were not initially constructed alongside the railway infrastructure, his administration chose to rehabilitate the Laderin road in line with its multimodal transportation policy, aimed at integrating road, rail, and other transport systems. The governor disclosed that between 100,000 and 150,000 passengers, including business investors, travel daily between Ogun, Lagos, and Oyo States, underscoring the importance of efficient access routes to rail facilities. He further stated that the newly unveiled train station road forms part of over 1,600 kilometres of roads constructed across the state. He added that while one lane of the Atan–Lusada–Agbara Road has been completed, construction work has already commenced on the second lane. Earlier, the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Ade Akinsanya, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Lateef Yusuf, explained that the three-kilometre road would provide direct access to the MKO Abiola Trade Fair Complex, as well as Laderin, Lukosi, and surrounding communities. He noted that the road would significantly ease movement while stimulating commercial growth in the area. Also speaking, a former member of the House of Representatives and the Osi of Egbaland, Chief Bode Mustapha, recalled the previously deplorable condition of the road, describing the newly completed project as a major improvement over past challenges.
