The statement read:“This morning, a serious collision involving a J5 Ford bus (FKJ 724 YC) and a Mercedes truck (FKJ 746 YC) occurred at Ilubirin, inward Sura, on the Lagos Third Mainland Bridge. The incident claimed one life and left a total of five individuals affected.” LASTMA officials, supported by bystanders, swiftly began rescue operations. Four victims were extricated from the vehicles, three of whom survived. Sadly, one individual trapped in the J5 Ford bus, which was loaded with pepper and other perishable goods, succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash. The survivors were rushed to Lagos Island’s General Hospital for immediate medical treatment. Preliminary investigations revealed that the J5 Ford bus suffered a brake failure while speeding, leading to a collision with the Mercedes truck. Police Arrest Suspected International Fraudsters Over Forged Certificates in Lagos The Nigerian police in Zone 2, Onikan, Lagos, have apprehended two individuals suspected of forging certificates from various international and African universities. These suspects, identified as Elvis Osakpolo Edokpain (23) and Kelly Osas Endgieen (24), were also involved in extensive online fraud schemes that have enabled them to acquire luxury vehicles and properties across the country. Details of the Arrest The suspects’ fraudulent activities came to light following credible intelligence received by the Anti-Corruption Unit of Zone 2. Acting on this tip, the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Adegoke Fayoude, ordered an immediate investigation. Detectives tracked the suspects to Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, and subsequently trailed them to a five-star hotel in Lekki, Lagos. They were apprehended while attempting to flee. Upon searching their luggage, forged documents were discovered, including: Confession and Motive Under interrogation, the suspects admitted to procuring the forged certificates through a female accomplice in Ghana. The primary motive was to secure Ghanaian residence permits under the guise of being students. They revealed they had paid a total of 26,000 Ghana cedis (approximately ₦2 million) for the fake documents. The suspects further disclosed that their fraudulent schemes included online romance scams, impersonation, and using fake foreign bank accounts for fraudulent transactions, often referred to as “Facebook bombing.” How the Scam Worked The suspects posed as “Captain Donald Rowe,” an American soldier on a peacekeeping mission in Syria, to dupe unsuspecting victims online. They promised victims access to high-value goods supposedly stationed in Syria and collected payments through blockchain wallets or foreign accounts, which were later funneled into Nigerian bank accounts. Their victims, primarily from Japan, Denmark, and China, were lured into transferring funds under false pretenses. Attempted Bribery and Ongoing Investigation During interrogation, the suspects attempted to bribe the police with ₦66 million, which was recovered as evidence. The police are now collaborating with the Ghanaian embassy and Interpol to apprehend other members of the syndicate operating internationally. Lessons for the Public The suspects admitted to turning to fraud due to financial hardship but urged youths to avoid shortcuts and work hard to achieve success. Lagos traders and consumers are expressing their happiness following a recent decrease in the price of beans. This comes after several months of rising costs, which had left many in the community concerned. According to interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday, the price drop has brought a sense of relief. Previously, beans had been sold for as much as N150,000 to N140,000 per 100kg bag due to a supply shortage. However, in recent weeks, prices have fallen to around N100,000 to N120,000 per bag, depending on the variety. Mr. Yakubu Ahmed, a foodstuff trader at Agege Market, attributed the price drop to the fresh harvest of beans from the northern regions of Nigeria. He noted that in the past few months, prices had been soaring due to the scarcity of beans. However, now that fresh stock has become available, prices have decreased. For example, a paint bucket of honey beans, which was once priced at N12,000, is now selling for between N8,000 and N9,000. The price for the drum variety has dropped from N11,000 to N8,000, while mini honey beans now cost N6,500, down from N8,500. Although the reduction is modest, it has brought relief to both consumers and traders. Mr. John Nwabueze, a foodstuff seller at Iyana-Ipaja, mentioned that the reasons behind the price drop remain unclear. He explained that while prices had been high in previous months, the recent price reduction has been a welcome change, with a bag of drum beans now costing between N100,000 and N110,000, down from N120,000. Mrs. Cornelia Edet, a resident of Ketu-Ikosi, shared her happiness with the change in prices. She had been reducing her purchases when prices were high but was able to buy a paint bucket of honey beans for N10,000 recently, a significant drop from the previous price of N16,000. Similarly, Mrs. Sandra Obalelenge from Dopemu found that a paint bucket of beans, which had cost her N10,500 just two weeks ago, was now available for between N7,500 and N8,000. While the reason for the drop in prices remains uncertain, consumers and traders alike are hopeful that the trend continues, especially during the holiday season when prices are often volatile. Ezekiel Udoh, a 41-year-old Lagos vehicle washer, was found guilty of defiling and impregnating his neighbor’s 12-year-old granddaughter and was given a life sentence. When delivering the sentence, Justice Rahman Oshodi of the Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court stated, “A child was forced to bear a child, forever altering the course of her life.” He concluded that the prosecution had established Udoh’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Oshodi called the offense “severe.” He said that the convicted person broke the community’s faith in him as an adult and exploited the minor’s innocence.
