The fully loaded tanker had fallen off a bridge in the midday hours, causing diesel to spill across the road and obstructing the free movement of traffic. In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), LASTMA confirmed that traffic had been redirected to the opposite side of the bridge as a precautionary safety measure. Emergency response teams, including personnel from the Lagos State Fire Service, the Nigeria Police Force, and LASTMA, were actively managing the scene to prevent any potential fire hazards. The statement further highlighted the presence of additional security and safety agencies, including the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Department of State Services (DSS), and officials from the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA). These teams were tasked with ensuring the safe evacuation of vehicles, preventing fire outbreaks, and restoring normal traffic flow in the area. At the time of reporting, there was no confirmation regarding whether a mechanical failure, such as brake malfunction, caused the tanker to topple. Fortunately, there was no fire outbreak during the incident. The explosion happened at approximately 8:08 p.m. when a 30-ton DAF Gas Truck transporting petroleum products burst into flames. Witnesses stated that the tanker was navigating the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway when the incident happened, causing panic among road users. Many motorists were forced to abandon their vehicles or make sharp U-turns in a desperate attempt to escape the raging inferno.
