According to reports, the arrest was linked to a series of online publications in which Agu allegedly criticised the governor’s leadership style, policies, and governance approach. Security operatives and state prosecutors claimed that his writings contained defamatory content intended to tarnish the image of the governor while inciting public distrust in the state’s leadership. The case has stirred intense debate among legal professionals, civil society groups, and human rights advocates. Many argue that the charges border on an infringement of freedom of speech and expression, a right guaranteed under Nigeria’s Constitution. Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State has authorized the immediate dismissal of the state’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister C.O.C. Akaolisa. This announcement was made public through an official press release issued by the Commissioner for Information, Public Orientation, and Strategy, Declan Emelumba. The press release directed the former Attorney General to transfer all government assets under his custody to the Solicitor General and Permanent Secretary of the Imo State Ministry of Justice without delay. Barrister Akaolisa had been a central figure in Governor Uzodinma’s inner circle and held the office since the beginning of the administration’s first term. His dismissal comes just a few weeks after the removal of the recently appointed Chief Judge of the state, Theophilus Nzeukwu. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Imo State has urgently called for a thorough investigation into the murder of its legal adviser, Chinedu Nwowu, in Oru West Local Government Area. The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday, January 22, when Nwowu was shot and killed by unidentified assailants in Mgbidi. The PDP spokesperson pointed out that such violent crimes have become an all-too-common occurrence in the state since 2020. In light of these developments, the party called on the state government under Governor Hope Uzodinma to take immediate action to address the worsening security situation. The PDP stressed that the government cannot continue to ignore its responsibility to protect the lives and property of Imo State citizens, particularly considering the considerable security resources allocated to the state.
