Ekiti Airport: A Game-Changer in Economic Development – Governor Oyebanji Governor Biodun Oyebanji, now approaching three years in office, has reiterated his administration’s commitment to transparency, economic growth, and infrastructural development in Ekiti State. He highlighted the significant strides made in agriculture, security, and governance, with the Ekiti Airport playing a crucial role in boosting the state’s economy and accessibility. Advancing Transparency and Good Governance Governor Oyebanji emphasized that strengthening governance through transparency remains a core focus. Under his leadership, all ministries now operate under the Treasury Single Account (TSA), ensuring accountability in financial management. Additionally, the internal revenue agency has been restructured to function autonomously, enhancing revenue generation and compliance across state institutions. These measures contributed to Ekiti State ranking highest in BudgIT’s national transparency survey. Strengthening Regional Security in the Southwest Discussing the recent Southwest Governors’ security summit, Oyebanji reaffirmed the collective commitment to safeguarding citizens. The governors established a regional command structure integrating intelligence-sharing and technology to enhance proactive responses to security challenges. Revolutionizing Agriculture for Economic Independence Ekiti State has positioned itself as a leader in agriculture by shifting from short-term palliatives to sustainable food production. Governor Oyebanji’s administration has invested in large-scale land clearing and cluster farming initiatives, with over 3,000 hectares cleared in the past year. This program has engaged over 2,000 youth in agribusiness, supported by the Ilu Eye Agro Trading Company, which eliminates middlemen and ensures fair pricing for farmers. Future plans include expanding irrigation infrastructure to facilitate year-round farming and establishing modern farm estates equipped with essential amenities to enhance productivity. The Economic Impact of Ekiti Airport Governor Oyebanji emphasized that Ekiti Airport is more than just an infrastructure project—it is a strategic investment that will drive economic growth. The airport, featuring a 3.5km runway, is expected to enhance trade, attract investors, and boost tourism in the landlocked state. The administration is also working on installing an Instrument Landing System (ILS) to improve flight operations in adverse weather conditions, making Ekiti Airport one of the most advanced in the region. “Any serious-minded state that prioritizes economic development must invest in transportation infrastructure. Investors, business executives, and tourists require seamless access, and air travel is the fastest and safest means. We are ensuring that Ekiti Airport remains competitive and operationally efficient by partnering with experienced management agencies,” Oyebanji stated. The airport is also set to play a vital role in agricultural exports, aligning with the state’s plan to enhance agribusiness. The government is actively developing logistics frameworks to facilitate the seamless movement of goods from farm clusters to global markets. Sustaining Revenue Growth Ekiti State recorded an impressive 75% growth in internally generated revenue (IGR) in 2023, positioning itself among Nigeria’s top-performing states. Governor Oyebanji attributed this success to strict financial reforms, digitalized tax collection systems, and a thriving business environment that encourages investment. The establishment of Amotekun remains one of the most significant developments in the South-West. While challenges exist, progress is being made, and the security outfit has proven effective. Amotekun recruits individuals familiar with the local terrain and deeply connected to the communities they serve. Effective security relies on intelligence, and without it, efforts would be misguided. These personnel, stationed within their localities, have stronger ties with the people, traditional institutions, and the general populace, fostering a sense of safety. They gather intelligence and share it exclusively within the security network, as they possess an in-depth understanding of the environment, including the forests. However, constitutional restrictions currently prevent them from carrying arms. We are in ongoing discussions with the Federal Government regarding this limitation, recognizing both the concerns and the necessity for change. Over time, we hope reason will prevail, leading to a structured framework that permits them to bear arms. While caution is needed in this process, their intelligence is already being shared with formal security agencies for coordinated action. Supreme Court Judgment and Local Governments in Ekiti State As a law-abiding state, we respect the Supreme Court’s ruling, and most states across the country have complied. However, even before the judgment, the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) had confirmed that Ekiti State did not interfere with local government allocations. Since Governor Fayemi’s tenure, we have been providing support to local governments. Despite delays in their funds, I ensured that local government workers were paid. Even before December last year, when their allocation had not arrived, we still paid salaries, including those of SUBEB and primary healthcare workers. Contrary to public perception, local governments do not have as much financial capacity as some believe. Second-Term Endorsements I appreciate the numerous endorsements from communities, associations, and political parties for a second term. However, I have neither acknowledged nor accepted them. My tenure lasts four years, and I am currently in my third year. Whether you believe it or not, I am deeply spiritual and firmly believe that leadership is determined by divine will. While I am grateful for the support, our party has a structured process. I became governor through due process, and when the time is right, we will follow the same procedure. I do not wish to be distracted by endorsements at this moment. However, it is within the rights of party members and stakeholders to express their support. Endorsements do not exclude other aspirants from contesting for the office. Once INEC officially signals the beginning of political activities in Ekiti State, I will make a formal statement regarding my decision. Ultimately, my candidacy is not solely my decision—it involves various stakeholders. I did not wake up one day and decide to become governor; I emerged through a process, and when the time comes, we will go through the same process again. For now, my focus remains on governance and delivering results. Infrastructure Development in Ekiti State In recent times, Ekiti State has transformed into a major construction hub, with projects such as the ring road, Ado-Ekiti flyover, and multiple inter-state roads underway. Notably, we have not relied on bonds to finance these projects.
