In a decisive move to uphold traditional protocols and community security, the Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, has annulled the appointments of three traditional rulers across different regions of the state. Government’s Rationale and Legal Grounds The announcement came via a statement released by Umar Musa Ikhilor, Secretary to the State Government, following a State Executive Council meeting held on Wednesday. The governor has also ordered the immediate reinstatement of Alhaji Aliyu Kelvin Danesi as the legitimate Aidenogie of South Ibie. According to the state government, the position was never legally or traditionally vacant before Umoru Inusa Umoru was named to the role. In the case of Lukman Akemokue, Governor Okpebholo cited a breach of customary succession protocols. The selection was found to contradict the Declaration of Customary Law as detailed in the Bendel State Legal Notice 132 of 1979, a document that outlines legitimate succession processes for traditional leadership. Addressing Insecurity and Community Welfare As for Dr. George Oshiapi Egabor, his removal as the Okumagbe of Uwano Kingdom was linked to ongoing insecurity in his jurisdiction, including incidents of kidnappings and killings. His suspension, followed by removal, aims to restore order and accountability in the region. A new selection process is already underway in line with Edo State’s traditional legal framework.
