Former Louis Saha, who played for Manchester United and the French national team, has openly described Jadon Sancho as the most underwhelming signing in the club’s history. During the era of Sir Alex Ferguson, Manchester United built a reputation for smart and effective transfers that contributed to sustained dominance. However, since Ferguson stepped down in 2013, the club’s recruitment strategy has faced consistent criticism. Over the years, Manchester United has spent billions on player acquisitions, yet the returns have been limited. Despite heavy investment, the club has failed to win the Premier League title since Ferguson’s departure, highlighting a significant gap between spending and success. Several high-profile players—including Paul Pogba, Antony, Romelu Lukaku, and Rasmus Højlund—were signed for fees exceeding £70 million. Alongside them is Harry Maguire, currently one of the club’s most prominent figures. However, none of these signings have fully justified their hefty price tags. According to Saha, Sancho stands out as the most disappointing among them. The winger joined Manchester United from Borussia Dortmund in 2021 for a reported £73 million. Despite arriving with high expectations, Sancho managed just 12 goals in 83 appearances for the club. His struggles at Old Trafford eventually led to loan spells at Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea, and Aston Villa. Although still officially tied to Manchester United, Sancho is expected to leave permanently once his contract expires. Saha admitted he had high hopes for Sancho when he first arrived, pointing to his exceptional performances in Germany. At Dortmund, Sancho displayed remarkable ability and creativity, which made his decline at Manchester United difficult to explain. Speaking in an interview with BetVictor, Saha expressed his surprise: He emphasized that Sancho had previously shown signs of becoming a world-class player and described his lack of progress as puzzling. In his view, the winger failed to reach anything close to his peak form. Saha also suggested that Sancho might benefit from a fresh start, drawing a comparison with Marcus Rashford, who has also experienced ups and downs in his career. Reflecting on his own playing days, Saha mentioned that despite dealing with injuries, he would have valued the opportunity to feature in as many matches as Sancho has at such a young age. He added that he genuinely hoped Sancho would succeed at Manchester United, given his undeniable talent. Ultimately, Saha concluded that Sancho’s situation is disappointing, especially considering the high expectations and potential he once carried.
