Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has unveiled plans to expand the state’s fiber-optic network by an additional 1,200 kilometers in 2025, complementing the current 2,500 kilometers. This was disclosed during the sixth Art of Technology Lagos Conference, themed “AI and the Lagos Digital Economy.” Represented by his Deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, the Governor also announced plans to establish world-class data centers within the next two years, further solidifying Lagos’ status as a leading technology hub in Africa. Strengthening Lagos as Africa’s Tech Capital Lagos, already recognized as Nigeria’s economic powerhouse, accounts for over 60% of the nation’s tech startups. In 2023 alone, Lagos-based startups raised over $1.2 billion, representing 75% of Nigeria’s total startup investments. Governor Sanwo-Olu attributed these successes to strategic policies and substantial investments aimed at fostering innovation and entrepreneurship. Key Digital Projects Commitment to Sustainability and Innovation The Lagos State Science, Research, and Innovation Council (LASRIC) has provided support to over 65 startups and 75 research initiatives across the state, underscoring Lagos’ dedication to sustainable development. Federal Collaboration on Fiber-Optic Projects At the national level, the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, is driving efforts to deploy 90,000 kilometers of fiber-optic cable nationwide. This ambitious project, backed by the World Bank and other financiers, aims to revolutionize connectivity across Nigeria. With these groundbreaking projects, Lagos continues to lead the charge in creating a digitally empowered and innovation-driven society, cementing its place as a top technology hub in Africa.
