Kano State Police Successfully Retrieve ₦4.85M Ransom and Arrest Five Suspects The Kano State Police Command has recovered and returned ₦4,850,000 to a kidnapping victim following a well-coordinated operation that led to the apprehension of five suspects involved in the crime. The Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, officially handed over the recovered ransom to the victim through the Chairman of Gabasawa Local Government Area, Hon. Pharm Sagir Usman Abubakar. Kidnapping Incident and Police Intervention According to the police spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the kidnapping occurred on March 8, 2025, when a resident of Zakirai in Gabasawa LGA was abducted from his community. The criminals initially demanded a ransom of ₦15 million in exchange for the victim’s freedom. However, the police, acting on intelligence reports, conducted a tactical rescue operation on March 17, 2025, successfully rescuing the victim and capturing five suspects linked to the abduction. A Nasarawa State High Court has ordered the remand of Timilehin Ajayi, a self-proclaimed gospel singer, after he was reportedly caught with the severed head of Salome Adaidu, a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member. The confirmation came from the Nasarawa State Police Command through a statement released on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday. Ajayi is currently in prison custody awaiting formal arraignment after being charged in court. Shocking Discovery and Arrest The tragic incident came to light when Caleb Umaru, a Bible Study Teacher and General Secretary of the church where Ajayi worshipped, raised the alarm. Umaru reported that a fellow church member had seen Ajayi behaving suspiciously near a river. The member witnessed Ajayi dispose of a bag into the water, which was later retrieved and shockingly found to contain the severed head of Adaidu. Confession and Denial Upon his arrest, Ajayi confessed to the crime, alleging that he killed Adaidu after discovering she was unfaithful. However, the deceased’s family strongly denied these claims. They asserted that Adaidu was never romantically involved with Ajayi and suggested she might have been kidnapped, contrary to earlier reports of her visiting Ajayi. Legal Proceedings Ajayi has been charged in court and remanded in prison while awaiting further legal actions. The authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the case. In a tragic incident, gunmen have reportedly killed three children of a native doctor in Nise community, Awka South Local Government Area, Anambra State. The harrowing event occurred on Saturday night when the assailants scaled the fence to access the residence. Reports reveal that the attackers placed the lifeless bodies of the victims inside a parked Mercedes Benz within the compound before making their escape. Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed to journalists on Monday that a manhunt for the perpetrators was underway. He stated, “The attackers invaded the premises, murdered the children, and left their remains in a parked Mercedes Benz within the compound. Though the event took place on Saturday, we received the report late on Sunday. Investigations are ongoing to determine if the father’s negligence played a role or the motive of the culprits.” An anonymous source revealed that the children, aged between six and two years old, were found with their mouths tied. The source further claimed that the native doctor had a habit of locking his wife and children inside the house while he was away. It was also alleged that the native doctor had unresolved disputes with certain individuals, though it remains unclear if these conflicts contributed to the tragic deaths of his children. The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has released a startling report revealing that over 25 million phones were stolen across Nigeria between March 2023 and April 2024. Shocking Statistics on Phone Theft The findings, detailed in the Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey 2024, indicate that an estimated 17,965,741 Nigerians fell victim to phone theft during this period. This crime has become one of the most rampant in the country, with seven out of ten stolen phones taken in homes or public spaces. Low Reporting and Police Response Despite the high prevalence, the majority of victims—over 90%—did not report their cases to the police. Among the small percentage who did, only 11.7% expressed satisfaction with the police response. This highlights a significant gap in law enforcement’s ability to address the issue effectively. Phone Theft Tops the Crime Chart The report also disclosed that 21.4% of Nigerians experienced some form of crime, with phone theft leading as the most common offense, affecting 13.8% of the population. The reluctance to report phone theft to law enforcement stems from various factors, including a lack of trust in the system and perceived inefficiency in resolving such cases. The Oyo State Police Command has paraded 15 suspected cultists and armed robbers, showcasing their commitment to tackling criminal activities across the state. The announcement was made on Monday by the Commissioner of Police, Ayodele Sonubi, at the command’s headquarters in Eleyele, Ibadan. Weapons and Evidence Recovered The police recovered a range of dangerous weapons, including three dane guns, one locally-made pistol, a long-barrel gun, three cutlasses, and five cult-themed jackets. Two vehicles and hard drugs were also seized during the operation. These items serve as critical evidence in the ongoing investigations. Locations of Cult Activities The Commissioner highlighted several hotspots of cult-related activities, including Apete, Abayomi (Iwo Road axis), Ijokodo, Moniya, Monatan, Ojoo, Samonda, and Sango. These areas have reportedly seen an increase in cult violence and retaliatory attacks as rival groups clash for dominance. Strategic Interventions Sonubi emphasized the importance of intelligence-led interventions to curb cultism and protect public safety. He stated, “Regular intelligence raids will prevent further bloodshed and disrupt the operations of these dangerous groups.” The Commissioner further explained that recent investigations have revealed that most cult-related violence is retaliatory and motivated by a desire for territorial dominance. Recent Arrests In a notable operation last Friday, the anti-robbery section of the Criminal Intelligence Department arrested three members of the notorious “Eiye” confraternity in the Kajorepo/Ojoo area. The group’s alleged leader, involved in several violent operations, was apprehended at his residence. Items recovered included a red cloth, a blue beret with the confraternity’s insignia, and a cutlass. On Saturday, another raid in the Ijokodo area led to the arrest of three suspected cultists. A locally-made gun and a dane gun were found hidden in the ceiling of their room. Public Appeal The Commissioner called on parents, community leaders, and stakeholders to discourage youth involvement in cultism. He warned that the police would continue to enforce strict measures to maintain peace and order in the state. “Anyone attempting to disrupt the state’s tranquility will face the full wrath of the law,” he added. Suspect’s Confession One of the suspects admitted to being a cultist but claimed to have renounced his involvement in 2020. However, he confessed to participating in the initiation of a new member back in 2018. Truck Driver, Motor Boy Arrested in Ogun for Beating Man to Death The Ogun State Police Command has apprehended a truck driver, Olalere Timileyin, and his motor boy at Obada Oko, Ewekoro Local Government Area, for allegedly assaulting a man to death over accusations of stealing a tarpaulin. The incident was confirmed by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Omolola Odutola, in a statement released on Saturday. According to Odutola, a resident, Alao Fadipe, reported the incident at around 3 a.m. on Friday, December 13. Fadipe stated that he witnessed a violent altercation in front of his house at Iyana Ikereku. Upon investigation, he observed Timileyin and his motor boy, both linked to a cement factory in Itori, allegedly beating the victim until he lost consciousness. Responding swiftly to the report, officers from the Obada Oko Police Division arrived at the scene and detained the suspects. The injured man was immediately rushed to the State Hospital in Ijaye for medical attention. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries during treatment. SP Odutola revealed that the victim’s body has been deposited at the morgue for an autopsy, while efforts are being made to contact his family. The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) in Eleweran for further investigation. The Ogun State Police Command also issued a stern warning to residents against engaging in acts of violence, especially during the festive season, to avoid disruptions of public peace.
