In a decisive move to enhance passenger comfort and safety, the Lagos State Government has announced that the transportation of goods and heavy luggage will no longer be permitted on regulated public transport buses operating across the state. The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) confirmed that this regulation will take effect from June 1, 2026. The announcement was made public on Tuesday by Kolawole Ojelabi, Head of Corporate Communication at LAMATA, who explained that the new policy was introduced following growing complaints from commuters and operational challenges faced by bus operators. LAMATA noted that using regulated buses for the transport of bulky goods has significantly impacted the comfort, safety, and efficiency of public transport services in Lagos. The authority highlighted that the decision follows strategic consultations with bus company operators, including key personnel from operations and maintenance departments. During these discussions, all stakeholders agreed that the practice of loading goods onto public buses must be halted and restructured to improve Lagos’ public transportation system. Strict Enforcement Measures Announced The agency emphasized that compliance with the ban would be strictly monitored. Any bus driver found violating this directive by transporting goods on regulated buses will face immediate dismissal and permanent blacklisting from the state’s public transport system. Similarly, LAMATA warned that terminal staff, ground personnel, or any LAMATA employees found facilitating the loading of goods onto buses will be summarily removed from service without exception. The authority reiterated its commitment to ensuring a zero-tolerance approach to non-compliance. “LAMATA emphasised that the enforcement of the suspension will be strict and uncompromising. Any bus driver found violating the directive by conveying goods during the suspension period will face immediate sack and be blacklisted. In addition, any ground staff or LAMATA personnel at terminals or loading points found aiding, permitting, or facilitating the loading of goods onto regulated buses will be summarily dismissed without exception,” the statement said. Impact on Commuters and Bus Operators The government urges all commuters, transport operators, and terminal officials to comply fully with this directive. Alternative arrangements should be made for the transportation of goods and cargo to prevent disruptions in daily commuting. LAMATA reaffirmed that the measure aims to restore order, enhance safety, and ensure a smoother, more reliable public transport system throughout Lagos. This new regulation is part of LAMATA’s broader strategy to deliver a commuter-friendly, efficient, and secure transportation environment. By eliminating the practice of transporting heavy luggage on public buses, the agency seeks to reduce overcrowding, minimize operational delays, and prioritize passenger safety above all else.
