The lawmaker representing the Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, Obi Aguocha, has urged families and communities across Igbo land to remain watchful and take proactive steps toward protecting their people amid growing security concerns. Aguocha’s warning followed the recent rescue of two residents from his hometown area of Ohuhu in Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State. The victims, Dennis Izuchukwu Okechi and Mrs Onyinyechi Ekechukwu, were reportedly recovered from a bush area after they were abducted by suspected bandits on Thursday night. Reacting to the incident on Friday, the federal lawmaker expressed concern over what he described as increasing threats facing different communities, warning that criminal elements may attempt to extend their activities into more areas. He also revealed that another resident, identified as Uche Amaechi from the Akpahia community, remains missing several weeks after he was reportedly kidnapped. According to Aguocha, the security situation requires urgent attention, stressing that communities must not ignore warning signs or remain silent while threats continue to develop. He stated that insecurity affecting other parts of the country is gradually becoming a concern in the South-East, adding that families and local communities must work together to improve awareness and safety measures. The lawmaker said communities can no longer afford to overlook security challenges because failure to respond early may expose residents to greater risks. He further explained that the situation requires collective responsibility, with residents encouraged to stay informed, report suspicious activities, and support legitimate security efforts within their areas. While acknowledging the role of government agencies in addressing insecurity, Aguocha emphasized that communities across Igbo land should remain vigilant and cooperate with authorities to prevent criminal activities.
