Insecurity in Nigeria: Minister Discloses Drone Types Deployed by Terrorist Groups

Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has provided clarity on the types of drones utilized by terrorist elements operating within the country. During the seventh edition of the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing held at the National Press Centre in Abuja, Abubakar stated that terrorist groups such as Boko Haram and other bandits rely solely on basic civilian drones and do not possess advanced or military-grade aerial surveillance technology. In his words, the Defence Minister emphasized, “These are simply civilian drones. The perpetrators attach explosives to them, adapt them creatively, and drop them manually. They are not sophisticated drones with precision-guided systems.” He added that the drones observed so far are the same commercial-grade drones commonly used by media professionals, but adapted to carry small explosive payloads—approximately one or two kilograms. Abubakar explained that ongoing intelligence efforts—both local and international—are being intensified in collaboration with the Office of the National Security Adviser. He stated, “We have significantly enhanced our surveillance operations and intelligence gathering. This has led to the arrest of several arms traffickers.” Furthermore, he assured Nigerians that authorities are actively tracking the sources of these drones and monitoring civilian drone usage across the country.
