Atiku Abubakar, who emerged as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential flag bearer during the 2023 general election, was recently mentioned in reports claiming that he had agreed to step aside in favour of Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in 2023. The same reports further alleged that Atiku not only relinquished his ambition but also endorsed the idea of a single-term presidency for Peter Obi. This claim was reportedly framed as a move aimed at promoting regional balance within the country’s political leadership. However, Atiku has categorically rejected these assertions, stressing that the reports do not represent the truth. He maintained that he has not exited the 2027 presidential contest, nor has he made any formal declaration supporting another candidate under the conditions being widely circulated. The denial puts to rest the speculation that his political ambition for 2027 has been abandoned or traded for any form of alliance arrangement. It also clarifies that discussions attributed to him regarding a one-term presidency are not based on verified statements from his camp. As political activities gradually begin to take shape ahead of 2027, Atiku’s response highlights the importance of relying on confirmed and credible information, especially as political narratives continue to evolve in the public space.
A senior official in the presidency has remarked that former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar may not be divinely appointed to serve as President of Nigeria, encouraging him to embrace the possibility with acceptance and faith. Daniel Bwala, who serves as the Special Adviser on Policy Communication to President Bola Tinubu, made this assertion during a televised interview on TVC News on Monday. During the program, he addressed the issues of political transition and the evolving landscape of opposition politics in Nigeria. Bwala emphasized the importance of accepting reality and advised Atiku to work hand in hand with President Tinubu in the interest of national development. “If I had a chance to speak to him directly, I would say: ‘Your Excellency, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, one must believe in destiny. God bestows leadership on whomever He pleases, and based on current events, it appears it may not be the divine will for you to govern this nation,’” he stated. The presidential aide called on Atiku, who was the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, to align himself with Tinubu’s government and leave a remarkable legacy—even if it is accomplished through someone else. “There are still numerous ways to make a meaningful impact. You have shared a long-standing friendship with President Bola Tinubu—join forces and offer your input to build the Nigeria you both envisioned for the people. Your lasting memory could be that, even in your political twilight, you succeeded in achieving aspects of your aspirations, even if they were through your ally.” Bwala warned that if Atiku insists on running again and seeks the presidency at all costs, the end of his political journey might not unfold as pleasantly as expected. “At this point, he has witnessed significant losses from within his political base—perhaps 60 to 70 percent of his followers,” he continued. Bwala noted that many younger politicians who once stood by Atiku are now determined to establish their own paths to leadership and have shown no intention of stepping back. This commentary comes in the wake of multiple defections from opposition parties to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Earlier in March, Atiku stated that he remained uncertain about running for the presidency in 2027, noting that such a decision would depend on the availability of a strong and credible platform.
