The Adamawa State Police Command has confirmed the apprehension of five individuals who are suspected to be involved in an armed robbery case. The suspects were arrested on Thursday and are accused of using dangerous weapons, such as daggers, knives, and face masks, to rob unsuspecting victims of their valuables. According to the Police Command’s spokesperson, SP Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje, the authorities were able to recover several offensive weapons and face masks from the suspects. The arrested individuals have been identified as Muhammad Ali (60 years old), Kalifa Muhammed (20 years old), Nuhu Muhammed (22 years old), Jamilu Muhammad (22 years old), and Abdullahi Isa (18 years old). All the suspects hail from the Mubi North Local Government Area in Adamawa State. Ex-convict John Agbontean was arrested for armed robbery at a Benin City church just two days after being released from prison. An ex-convict, John Agbontean, was apprehended by the Edo State Police Command for his alleged involvement in a robbery incident at a church in Benin City, just two days after completing a jail term. The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Moses Joel Yamu, confirmed the arrest in an official statement. According to the PPRO, the robbery occurred at the Restoration Gospel Ministry located at No. 11 Oviasuyi Street, off Ogiemwenke in Benin City. John Agbontean, armed with a cut-to-size gun, was caught attempting to rob the church during its end-of-year harvest thanksgiving service. The suspect had recently been released from Oko Prison in Benin City on December 19, 2024. During interrogation, Agbontean admitted to being an ex-convict and revealed that he collaborated with an accomplice named Ola (surname unknown), who managed to escape arrest. The duo reportedly conspired to rob the church of its offerings, but the plan was thwarted when Agbontean was arrested on-site. Police operatives are currently investigating the incident and pursuing Agbontean’s accomplice. The police also successfully recovered 150 arms, including 32 AK-47 rifles. The State Commissioner of Police, Abaniwonda Olufemi, shared this during a media briefing at the police headquarters in Asaba. He emphasized that these achievements result from concerted efforts since he assumed office in February 2024 as the 22nd Commissioner of Police. “Despite challenges, we have restored relative peace, thanks to the support of other security agencies, stakeholders, and residents of Delta State,” Olufemi stated. Tragic Baby Killing Case Among the notable incidents was the harrowing case of a 10-month-old baby, Prevail Jonathan, who was reported missing on December 4, 2024. The child’s lifeless body was discovered in the Aviara community river during police investigations. Shocking confessions from the baby’s mother, Blessing Ibuku, revealed that she threw her child into the river on November 31, 2024, due to humiliation from friends mocking her about the child being fatherless. Blessing is currently in custody while investigations continue. Kidnapping Foiled in Asaba On November 27, 2024, the command responded to a distress call about a kidnapping on DLA Road, Asaba. Four armed criminals in a Toyota Camry (BLF 490 AA) abducted a man and woman, stealing a vehicle belonging to one victim. The police’s Special Anti-Kidnapping and Cyber Crime Squad (SAKCCS) tracked the suspects to the Asaba-Benin Expressway. Although the victims were released, the kidnappers abandoned their car and fled into the bush. Recovered Items: Major Robbery Arrest in Asaba In another operation on December 2, 2024, the police, alongside the Rapid Response Squad and Buffalo Squad, raided a criminal hideout behind Anioma Market, Asaba. This resulted in the arrest of 10 suspects linked to robberies in Asaba, Okpanam, and Issele-Uku, with multiple arms recovered. Murder-for-Hire Confession The police also arrested Destiny Lawrence, who confessed to kidnapping a boy for ₦30,000 under orders from a native doctor named Jonah from Otolokpo community. Jonah allegedly slit the boy’s throat in an uncompleted building.
