President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has led Vice President Kashim Shettima, state governors, and other senior government officials in honouring Nigeria’s fallen military heroes, assuring that their sacrifices in defending the nation’s unity, peace, and sovereignty will never be forgotten. In a message commemorating the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance and Celebration Day (AFRCD), the President reiterated his administration’s strong commitment to the welfare, dignity, and operational effectiveness of members of the Nigerian Armed Forces. He pledged continued institutional and moral support as the military confronts persistent security challenges across the country. The Armed Forces Remembrance and Celebration Day is an annual national event organised by the Ministry of Defence to recognise and honour officers and personnel who lost their lives while serving Nigeria. These include those who died during the First and Second World Wars, the Nigerian Civil War, peacekeeping missions, and various internal security operations, particularly the ongoing fight against terrorism, insurgency, and other threats to national stability. Beyond honouring the dead, the event also celebrates living veterans and provides an avenue for financial and moral support for retired personnel, widows, dependents, and families of fallen service members. Although observed globally, Nigeria’s remembrance carries a unique historical significance. As a Commonwealth nation, the country previously marked Remembrance Day on November 11, alongside other member states, in honour of soldiers who died during the World Wars. Over time, Nigeria adapted the observance to reflect its own military history and contemporary security realities. In his official message, President Tinubu stated that Armed Forces Remembrance Day remains a solemn moment for national reflection. He emphasised that while the names of many fallen heroes may not be widely known, their courage continues to sustain the nation’s freedom and stability. According to him, any country that forgets those who gave their lives in its defence risks losing its sense of purpose, adding that Nigeria remains committed to remembrance. Addressing the families of fallen soldiers, the President acknowledged the depth of their loss and assured them that the nation remains grateful for the ultimate sacrifice made by their loved ones in the service of a united Nigeria. He stressed that their bravery and selflessness would always be remembered by Nigerians. President Tinubu also paid tribute to serving military personnel across all branches, recognising their professionalism, discipline, and courage in protecting Nigeria’s territorial integrity on land, sea, and air. Governors Pay Tribute Across States Across the federation, state governors and their representatives participated in remembrance ceremonies, laying wreaths and reaffirming support for the Armed Forces and families of fallen heroes. In Lagos State, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, assured continued state support for security agencies in safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty. Speaking at the Remembrance Arcade at Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos Island, he emphasised that the sacrifices of fallen heroes would always be honoured and that government commitment to their families remained unwavering. Similarly, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, during the ceremony at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan, reiterated his administration’s determination to strengthen security architecture in the state. He noted that sustained peace and security are essential for economic development and social stability. In Ondo State, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa announced the approval and release of ₦50 million for interest-free microcredit loans to widows and dependents of fallen heroes in 2026. Speaking at the Government Cenotaph in Akure, he explained that the initiative, now a regular feature of the annual remembrance, would continue regardless of economic conditions to support beneficiaries’ livelihoods. Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori led service commanders, security chiefs, and top government officials in laying wreaths at the Cenotaph in Asaba. The ceremony was attended by the deputy governor, speaker of the state assembly, chief judge, and senior military and police officials. In Rivers State, Governor Siminalayi Fubara commended President Tinubu for strengthening the Armed Forces through improved welfare packages, enhanced motivation, and the provision of modern equipment. He stressed that honouring fallen heroes must extend beyond ceremonies to sustained action against insurgency and internal conflicts. Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris, speaking at the Haliru Abdu Stadium, assured serving and retired military personnel that they would not be abandoned, acknowledging their role as the backbone of national unity and security. In Sokoto State, Governor Ahmed Aliyu reaffirmed that the sacrifices of fallen heroes would never be compromised, describing their service as fundamental to Nigeria’s continued existence. He said the annual remembrance also serves as a renewed commitment to supporting the Armed Forces in combating terrorism and banditry. In Plateau State, Governor Caleb Mutfwang, represented by his deputy, Mrs. Josephine Piyo, led officials and veterans in laying wreaths in Jos. The ceremony included interdenominational prayers, a minute of silence, the symbolic release of pigeons to signify peace, and a three-gun salute in honour of the Unknown Soldier. Political Reactions The African Democratic Congress (ADC) criticised President Tinubu’s absence from the ceremony, describing it as concerning amid Nigeria’s security challenges. In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party argued that the physical presence of the Commander-in-Chief carries strong moral and symbolic importance for troops and military families. Similarly, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) faulted the Federal Government over what it described as inadequate welfare and funding for the Armed Forces. In a statement by factional National Chairman Kabiru Turaki, the party urged improved welfare packages and increased funding for security agencies to effectively tackle insecurity nationwide. Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has approved the immediate employment of children of deceased servicemen as part of deliberate efforts to strengthen support systems for families of fallen heroes in the state. The governor made this directive public on Thursday during the Armed Forces Remembrance Day ceremony held at the Government House in Port Harcourt, an event that officially marked activities for the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day. Governor Fubara explained that the decision aligns with his administration’s deep commitment to the welfare of members of the Armed Forces, other security agencies, and the families of personnel who paid the ultimate sacrifice while defending the nation. To ensure swift implementation, the governor issued a direct instruction to the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr Benibo Anabraba, mandating him to immediately commence the employment process for eligible beneficiaries. Speaking during the ceremony, Fubara emphasized that the directive was a concrete demonstration of the state government’s responsibility toward veterans and their dependents. “I want to mention here that in line with our support, the secretary to the state government has been given a marching order to ensure that the employment promised by the State Government for the children of our veterans would be immediately attended to. This is part of our way of showing socio-economic support to the families,” the governor stated. Beyond employment opportunities, Governor Fubara reaffirmed Rivers State’s continued partnership with military formations operating within the state. He stated that Nigerians across the 36 states had gathered in churches as people of faith and purpose, trusting in divine promises and national restoration. Cleric Warns Against Coups, Urges Military to Defend Democracy Also speaking at the event, Most Rev. Uche Dan Okafor, who delivered the sermon, made a strong appeal to members of the Armed Forces to remain loyal to democratic governance and resist any temptation to interfere in Nigeria’s democracy. Addressing the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, and other service chiefs, the cleric urged them to stand firmly in defence of constitutional order, especially as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections. He acknowledged that insecurity across the country has been discouraging for many citizens but encouraged the military not to lose heart. He reminded them that their duty goes beyond national service, describing their efforts against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and criminality as service to God, who condemns such vices. According to him, Nigeria is entering a new phase where the tide will turn against insecurity. He expressed strong optimism that terrorists, bandits, kidnappers, and their sponsors would soon be exposed and defeated. He urged the Armed Forces to remain politically neutral as elections draw closer and cautioned against the growing trend of military coups across parts of West Africa. He specifically warned against following the path taken by countries such as Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, and Guinea, where democratically elected governments were recently overthrown. The cleric emphasized that Nigeria must not be drawn into similar instability and encouraged the military to uphold professionalism and national unity. Senate President Reaffirms Legislative Support for Security Meanwhile, Senate President Godswill Akpabio reaffirmed the commitment of the National Assembly to working closely with the Executive arm of government to restore Nigeria’s peace and security. Represented by the Deputy Chief Whip, Senator Peter Nwebonyi, Akpabio stated that the sacrifices of both fallen and living members of the Armed Forces have strengthened the nation’s resolve to build a safer, stronger, and more united Nigeria. He described the blood of fallen heroes and heroines as the foundation of national unity, peace, and progress, noting that their sacrifices continue to shape the country’s future. The Senate President highlighted Nigeria’s diversity, describing the country as one of the most linguistically diverse nations globally, united under one flag despite religious and cultural differences. He emphasized that the Nigerian Constitution guarantees freedom of religion, worship, and conscience, describing these freedoms as essential pillars of democracy that must be safeguarded at all times. He concluded by stating that history would judge leaders not merely by their words but by their actions, urging all stakeholders to make decisions today that would secure a better future for generations to come.
