It’s important to note that this road is the lifeline to major agro-industrial hubs such as Orient Farms Ltd, Eagle Foods Industries Ltd, Efi Igbo Ranch, Emenike Pineapple Farms Ltd, Ohuche Cashew Industries Ltd, and others. These establishments play a significant role in Anambra’s agricultural economy, and any further deterioration would have devastating consequences. With swift intervention, this road will provide a seamless connection between the bustling Nkwo market in Umuchu and the agricultural powerhouse of Achalla, Ibughubu, and Umunze towns, extending to Imo State. The Anambra State Police Command has apprehended two suspects accused of killing their brother and burying him in a shallow grave within their compound in Oko community, Orumba North Local Government Area, Anambra State. During a press briefing in Awka, Commissioner of Police Nnaghe Itam disclosed that the victim, Chibuzor Okeke, was accused of burglary and theft. His brother, Chidiebere Okeke, and cousin, Emebo Ogochukwu, confronted him, allegedly beating him severely. The assault rendered Chibuzor unconscious, prompting a rushed hospital visit where doctors confirmed him dead. To cover up the crime, the suspects reportedly buried Chibuzor in a shallow grave within their compound. Child Trafficking Case Uncovered Commissioner Itam also reported the rescue of four children abducted from their parents in Bauchi State and trafficked to Anambra. Four suspects, including an illegal foster mother, were arrested in connection with the case. The suspects confessed to the crime and explained their individual roles. Efforts are ongoing to reunite the children with their biological families. Criminal Camp Dismantled in Nimo On December 24, 2024, a joint operation led by the Nigeria Police Force, along with the Military, Civil Defence, and Anambra Vigilante operatives, raided a criminal hideout in Nimo, Njikoka LGA. The operation led to the destruction of makeshift structures and the recovery of 19 unexploded Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). Several suspects sustained injuries while fleeing. Anti-Cultism Raid in Awka South In a separate operation, police from the Anti-Cultism Squad raided a known criminal hotspot in Umunaga Village, Awka South LGA. Two suspects, Okechukwu Chinwuko (27) and Ezenwa Chinedu (22), were arrested. Recovered items included a pump-action gun, four live cartridges, a cutlass, charms, and substances suspected to be hard drugs. Two female victims who had been sexually assaulted were also rescued. Will Nnamdi Kanu’s Release End South-East Insecurity? Soludo Doubts Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has cast doubt on whether releasing Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), would bring an end to the persistent insecurity in the South-East region. Speaking on Tuesday at a press briefing in Amawbia, the governor highlighted how criminal elements have exploited the Biafran agitation to fuel organized crime and destabilize the region. Criminals Exploiting the Biafran Struggle Governor Soludo noted that what began as a call for liberation has been hijacked by criminals engaging in armed robbery, kidnapping, cultism, and other unlawful activities. He described these actions as “lucrative criminality,” emphasizing that they have no connection to the original Biafran struggle. “These so-called agitators have transformed into organized criminal gangs,” Soludo stated. “They hide in forests, kidnap innocent citizens for ransom, and justify their actions under the pretext of Biafra. But make no mistake—this is driven by greed, not a genuine liberation effort.” Doubts Over Kanu’s Influence on Criminal Gangs Soludo expressed skepticism about whether Nnamdi Kanu’s release could influence the criminals operating in the region. According to him, many of these groups no longer align with IPOB’s ideology and have shifted focus to amassing wealth through crime. “Kanu and IPOB have repeatedly dissociated themselves from these criminals,” Soludo said. “Even if Kanu is released today, these criminals are unlikely to listen because they are motivated by greed, not liberation. They’ve become enemies of the people they claim to protect.” Alarming Statistics and Community Complicity The governor revealed that over the past two years, more than 99% of the criminals arrested in Anambra were Igbo, with over 70% being non-indigenes of the state. He also criticized some communities for aiding these criminals by providing them with food and shelter while viewing security agencies as adversaries. “Our people know these criminals—they’re our brothers, cousins, and neighbors,” Soludo lamented. “In some communities, locals sustain them, which makes fighting insecurity even harder. How do you defeat crime when criminals are seen as heroes and security operatives as enemies?” Operation Udo Ga Chi: Anambra’s New Security Initiative To combat rising insecurity, Soludo announced a state-wide security initiative called ‘Operation Udo Ga Chi’ (Operation Peace Shall Reign), set to launch after January 25. The program will include: The governor also extended an olive branch to criminals, urging them to embrace the ongoing amnesty program, which is available until the end of February. Call for Collective Responsibility Soludo stressed that tackling insecurity requires collective action. He urged traditional rulers, religious leaders, and residents to take charge of their communities and cooperate with security agencies. “Insecurity is a monster we must confront together,” Soludo stated. “If you see something, say something. In a shocking incident in Ifite-Awka, Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State, unidentified gunmen unleashed terror on Wednesday evening, leaving four people dead and one abducted. The attack created panic throughout the community, forcing residents to flee while traders hastily shut their shops. Eyewitnesses recounted that the gunmen targeted popular spots such as Book Foundation Junction, Ukwu Aki Bus Stop, “B” Bus Stop, Commissioners’ Quarters, and the Bamboo area of the city. During the rampage, the manager of a renowned hotel in Awka was abducted. His whereabouts remain unknown at the time of this report. A local trader who spoke anonymously described the ordeal: “Around 7 pm, the gunshots started suddenly. Three people were killed at Book Foundation Junction, and another at Ukwu Aki Bus Stop. The attackers also stormed a hotel at Commissioners’ Quarters, kidnapping the manager. We’ve heard that the kidnappers initially demanded ₦20 million but later reduced it to ₦12 million as ransom.” The violence caused widespread fear, with businesses remaining closed even the following day. Another resident, identified as Chibuike, added: “They killed three at Ifite last night and another at ‘B’ Bus Stop. This morning, someone was also shot near the Ukwu Aki area. December is becoming frighteningly bloody.” Despite the gravity of the situation, hotel staff declined to provide further comments. Meanwhile, the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, stated that the police were unaware of the incident but urged relatives of victims to contact law enforcement.
