The revered traditional ruler of Onitsha, His Majesty Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe, has voiced deep concern over the worsening state of hunger, poverty, and insecurity affecting millions of Nigerians. Speaking during the 2025 Ofala Festival held in Onitsha, Anambra State, the Obi expressed dismay that despite the economic and social challenges confronting the nation, the focus of many political leaders has already turned toward the 2027 general elections. According to the monarch, this premature political attention neglects the dire reality of Nigerians who continue to struggle with food shortages, inflation, and rising unemployment. He emphasized that the growing level of insecurity and poverty has reached a critical stage, demanding urgent and sincere intervention from both state and federal governments. The Obi of Onitsha described the situation as a “national emergency” that requires collective responsibility from citizens, leaders, and traditional institutions alike. He lamented that many communities across the country have become unsafe due to kidnapping, armed robbery, and banditry, forcing several families into displacement and economic hardship. Achebe further called on political leaders to prioritize the welfare of their citizens over personal ambition, noting that meaningful leadership should be centered on alleviating suffering and restoring hope to the people. He encouraged Nigerians not to lose faith, expressing optimism that with unity, discipline, and commitment to good governance, the nation could overcome its current challenges. The 2025 Ofala Festival, which attracted dignitaries from various sectors, also served as a platform for cultural preservation and community development. The event showcased the rich cultural heritage of Onitsha Kingdom and underscored the importance of traditional leadership in national transformation.
