The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has expressed strong disapproval of the growing support on social media for the alleged killer of Assistant Superintendent of the EFCC, ASEII Aminu Sahabi Salisu. Salisu tragically lost his life on January 17, 2025, while executing his official duty in Anambra State to apprehend suspected internet fraudsters. EFCC Responds to the Incident In a statement released on Sunday, the EFCC mourned the death of Salisu and criticized the false narratives being circulated online regarding the incident. The statement, signed by Dele Oyewale, Head of Media and Publicity, emphasized the injustice of defending the suspect, Joshua Chukwubueze Ikechukwu, who reportedly shot Salisu and injured another officer during the operation. The Commission condemned those spreading these narratives and called for respect toward Salisu’s family and the integrity of the nation. Incident Overview The incident occurred in Awka, Anambra State, during an EFCC operation to apprehend suspected internet fraudsters. While the team successfully detained 37 suspects without incident, Ikechukwu resisted arrest by refusing to open his door and later shooting at the officers. Salisu was fatally wounded, and another officer sustained injuries during the attack. Preliminary investigations revealed that Ikechukwu was involved in coding and questionable online medical supply operations. EFCC’s Stand Against False Narratives The EFCC denounced the online glorification of Ikechukwu, calling it “irresponsible, inhuman, and outrageous.” The agency reiterated that Salisu’s death was a result of a criminal act, which should not be rationalized or celebrated. “The activities of internet fraudsters have escalated into serious threats to public safety and security,” the EFCC said. Intelligence reports have linked these criminals to activities like armed violence, kidnapping, ritual killings, and other hazardous crimes. Justice and Future Measures Ikechukwu is currently in police custody and will face prosecution for his actions. Anambra Police Prevent Kidnapping, Arrest Key Suspect In a decisive move to curb crime, the Anambra State Police Command apprehended a 32-year-old suspect, Chukwuma Obi, from Umuagu Village, Igboukwu, Aguata Local Government Area. The arrest is linked to an alleged attempt at kidnapping and extortion. According to Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police Command’s spokesperson, operatives from the Anti-Cultism Squad in Enugu-Ukwu carried out the arrest on Tuesday. The suspect reportedly demanded ₦1.2 million in ransom, threatening to abduct the victim if the payment wasn’t made to a specified account. Ikenga disclosed that the victim received a threatening message from someone claiming to be a member of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The suspect admitted to the crime during interrogation and is cooperating with the police to identify other members of the gang involved. This arrest follows another breakthrough last month when police nabbed a couple notorious for sending threatening messages and extorting victims under the pretense of planned kidnappings. The couple confessed to their crimes and revealed they destroyed SIM cards used in their illegal activities. The State Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Obono Itam, reaffirmed the Command’s dedication to pursuing justice and preventing criminal acts. A UNIZIK lecturer, Dr. Fabian Osita, was tragically shot dead during a carjacking in Anambra State. The police have launched investigations into the rising insecurity. A tragic incident occurred on Monday night in Anambra State, claiming the life of Dr. Fabian Osita, a lecturer at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka. He was shot dead by armed carjackers near the high-tension area in Aroma Junction, Awka, while on his way home from work. According to eyewitnesses, the gunmen intercepted Dr. Osita’s vehicle, a Toyota Corolla, and demanded the car. When he resisted, they shot him in the head, killing him instantly. The assailants abandoned his lifeless body at the scene and fled with the vehicle. Dr. Osita was a dedicated lecturer in UNIZIK’s Business Department. His sudden death has plunged the university community into mourning. The Chief Security Officer of the institution, Ken Chukwurah, confirmed the incident, adding that members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at UNIZIK are planning to protest the rising wave of insecurity in Awka. Chukwurah noted: “The attack happened around 7:30 pm outside the campus, in the Aroma area. It was a clear case of carjacking that ended in tragedy.” The Anambra State Police Command also confirmed the killing. Police Public Relations Officer SP Tochukwu Ikenga stated that investigations have begun to identify and apprehend the perpetrators. Ikenga urged the public to assist with any useful information, particularly regarding the stolen car—a Toyota Corolla (2006 model, ash color) with an Enugu plate number.
