The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has given a detailed explanation for its decision to withdraw from ongoing coalition negotiations aimed at unseating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general elections. Prince Adewole Adebayo, who served as the SDP’s presidential flagbearer during the 2023 election, disclosed that the talks eventually failed due to serious concerns surrounding credibility, ideological alignment, and personal integrity among some opposition figures involved in the discussions. While speaking with journalists on Sunday, Adebayo made it clear that the SDP is not fundamentally against coalition arrangements. However, he emphasized that the party would not associate with individuals whose political history, conduct, or values conflict with the principles upon which the SDP stands. According to him, merely opposing President Tinubu or the ruling administration is not a sufficient basis for forming a political alliance. He stressed that opposition politics must go beyond shared dissatisfaction and be rooted in a clear vision, ethical leadership, and policy-driven objectives. Adebayo further revealed that several politicians who expressed interest in joining the coalition were subjected to internal assessments by the party. Following this screening process, many were turned away, while some were not even considered fit to advance to the interview stage. He alleged that certain opposition actors were attempting to take advantage of public frustration with the current government, without presenting any meaningful or credible solutions to Nigeria’s long-standing challenges. According to him, exploiting public anger without offering responsible alternatives only deepens political distrust. The SDP leader warned that removing the current leadership only to replace it with individuals he described as potentially “more damaging” would not improve the country’s situation. He maintained that Nigerians would gain nothing from a power shift driven solely by selfish motives or personal ambition. Adebayo also took a strong stance against politicians facing unresolved corruption allegations who are now positioning themselves as reform-minded alternatives. He argued that such individuals lack the moral standing required to lead a nation grappling with governance and accountability issues. He reiterated that for any coalition to be meaningful and effective, it must be built on shared ideology, transparency, accountability, and a concrete plan to confront Nigeria’s economic, social, and political problems. According to Adebayo, politicians seeking alliances must first accept responsibility for their contribution to the country’s current difficulties before presenting themselves as champions of change. In conclusion, he stated that the SDP would rather stay outside government than compromise its core values. He emphasized that betraying public trust for political gain is not an option, reaffirming the party’s commitment to integrity over access to power.
