Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, has shared his perspective on the absence of Nigerian forward Victor Osimhen ahead of Nigeria’s highly anticipated 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against South Africa.
Osimhen, who plays as a striker, will not feature in the clash with Bafana Bafana on Tuesday after picking up an injury during the match against Rwanda. His unavailability has stirred conversations among fans and analysts, but the coach remains confident in the depth of his squad.
Speaking during his pre-match press conference, Chelle acknowledged that the team is mindful of the Napoli forward’s absence but emphasized that the squad remains strong and ready.
“Victor Osimhen is undoubtedly a top star and an outstanding talent. However, I have a group of excellent players at my disposal, and they are fully capable of delivering results,” Chelle stated.
“We always think about Osimhen because he is like a brother to us, but our responsibility is to stay united and perform well against South Africa. There is no time for regrets or distractions,” he explained.
Chelle further highlighted that the Super Eagles are determined to put up a strong performance, noting that unity and focus are key to their success in the World Cup qualifying campaign.
As Nigeria faces South Africa, the coach reassured fans that the absence of a star player would not derail their determination. According to Chelle, the squad is motivated, ready, and eager to give their best on the pitch.
