South Africa’s head coach, Hugo Broos, has emphatically declared that Bafana Bafana merit a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. His conviction comes amid controversy: FIFA imposed a three-point deduction on the team last week, citing the involvement of Teboho Mokoena in a qualifier in March 2025 despite his suspension.

That administrative error has shaken Group C. However, Broos refuses to let it define the narrative. He has publicly taken responsibility, acknowledging that as coach he should have known Mokoena was ineligible.

Despite the setback, Broos believes his squad’s performance over the qualifying campaign justifies their claim. He says that no other team in the group has shown as much consistency, resilience, and quality.

The Stakes in Group C

With the three-point sanction, South Africa now trails Benin on goal difference, even though both have the same number of points. Broos is under pressure: the matches against Zimbabwe and Rwanda now carry even greater weight.

He has labeled the upcoming game against Zimbabwe the most critical of the campaign. A victory there would give Bafana Bafana a real shot at topping the group. Broos also expressed confidence that Benin will not win both of their remaining matches, meaning South Africa’s path is open if they deliver.

Accountability and Confidence

In the wake of the deduction, Broos stepped forward and shouldered the blame. He insisted that the mistake does not undermine his belief in the team.

He has urged supporters to stay behind the squad as they face this crucial stretch. “Focus on the remaining games and back us,” he pleaded, adding that, in his view, if there is a team that deserves to qualify — it is South Africa.
