The National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Shehu Gabam, has issued a strong statement, asserting that the 2027 presidential election is open for any party to win. Gabam emphasized that election victories are not solely determined by individual brilliance or strategic planning but by the will of the people.
During an interview on Channels Television, he disclosed that key political figures are defecting to the SDP in large numbers across Nigeria. He also reassured that the party remains open to welcoming more influential personalities.
High-Profile Politicians Defecting to SDP
According to DAILY POST, former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, recently resigned from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to join the SDP. Gabam noted that the party has been witnessing a continuous influx of former senators, ministers, and other dignitaries.
“We receive decampees into SDP almost every day, covering every state in the federation. Today alone, I welcomed some top figures into my office. If you search online, you will see that over 300 VIPs have submitted resignation letters from their former parties to join us,” Gabam stated.
SDP Confident of Victory in 2027
Shehu Gabam made it clear that the SDP’s goal is to take over the Nigerian government in 2027. He stressed that the current administration is failing to address the concerns of citizens, which could lead to their downfall in the next election.
“The APC’s mission is to retain power, while the PDP wants to reclaim power. But as SDP, our objective is to form the next government,” Gabam said.
He further argued that the Nigerian government lacks effective leadership, and many untapped talents can offer better governance.
“No single individual or party has a monopoly on leadership. If there were real efficiency in power, we wouldn’t be seeing repeated governance failures,” he added.
Could SDP Emerge as a Strong Alternative?
With more influential politicians defecting and growing public dissatisfaction with the APC-led government, political analysts believe that SDP might emerge as a serious contender in the 2027 elections. The coming months will determine whether the party can consolidate its momentum and challenge the dominance of APC and PDP.
