Nigerian Afrobeats superstar Rema, born Divine Ikubor, has been officially confirmed as one of the major performers for the opening ceremony of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States.
The global football event will feature an impressive lineup of international music stars, including South African singer Tyla, American rapper Future, pop legend Katy Perry, Brazilian music sensation Anitta, and LISA of the globally recognised K-pop group BLACKPINK.
According to a statement released by FIFA on Saturday, the opening celebrations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup will take place across three different countries hosting the competition — the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
The ceremony in the United States is scheduled to hold on Friday, June 12, 2026, at the Los Angeles Stadium, where fans are expected to witness a spectacular fusion of football, entertainment, live performances, and cultural displays.
FIFA also confirmed that additional ceremonies will be organised in Mexico City on June 11 and in Toronto, Canada, on June 12, creating a historic beginning for the biggest football tournament in the world.
The football body explained that this will mark the first time in FIFA World Cup history that three separate opening ceremonies will be staged across multiple host nations. The organisation described the upcoming celebration as a historic summer event designed to unite millions of football lovers through sports, music, and entertainment.
In its official announcement, FIFA revealed that the ceremony in Los Angeles would showcase a combination of electrifying live performances, immersive storytelling, and large-scale visual productions created to reflect the prestige and global influence of the World Cup tournament.
The organisation stated that more internationally recognised performers are still expected to be announced in the coming months, increasing anticipation ahead of the competition.
FIFA further explained that the Los Angeles opening event would begin approximately 90 minutes before the opening match kicks off. Fans attending the event have been advised to arrive early in order to enjoy the complete pre-match entertainment activities and performances.
President of FIFA, Gianni Infantino, stated that the selected artists represent the cultural diversity and entertainment strength of the United States, while also highlighting the ability of music to unite people from different backgrounds around the world.
According to Infantino, the ceremony is expected to demonstrate the extraordinary scale and global attraction of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while celebrating the cultural impact of music, sports, and entertainment on international audiences.
FIFA also disclosed that the event production will be handled in partnership with Balich Wonder Studio. The production company is expected to deliver a visually captivating experience featuring advanced stage effects, creative storytelling concepts, and live artistic performances built around the iconic FIFA World Cup Trophy.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is already projected to become the biggest tournament in football history. The competition will feature a record-breaking 104 matches played across 16 host cities located in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
The tournament is scheduled to officially begin on June 11, 2026, in Mexico City, while the final match will be played on July 19, 2026, at the New York New Jersey Stadium.
