President Tinubu to Commission 7-Story NUPENG Tower on December 4

All is set for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to officially commission the newly completed NUPENG Tower, the national headquarters of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), on Thursday, December 4, 2024.

A Historic Event in Lagos

The seven-story NUPENG Tower, located at No. 9 Jibowu Street, Yaba, Lagos, stands as a landmark achievement symbolizing the union’s commitment to advancing workers’ welfare and creating an efficient workspace.

President Tinubu will be joined by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, host governor of the event, alongside key dignitaries, leaders, and stakeholders from the global oil and gas industry. Representatives from NUPENG’s international headquarters in Geneva are also expected to attend.

Invitation to the President

The invitation to commission the NUPENG Tower was made via a letter dated October 7, 2024, signed by NUPENG General Secretary Comrade Afolabi Olawale. The letter, received by the Chief of Staff to the President on October 14, highlighted the union’s desire for Tinubu’s physical presence as a demonstration of his support for Nigerian workers and his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Recognition of Tinubu’s Leadership

During the ceremony, President Tinubu will also be honored as the Grand Patron of NUPENG. This recognition reflects his administration’s alignment with NUPENG’s vision of promoting economic growth and better working conditions in the oil and gas sector.

In the invitation, NUPENG described the tower as more than just a physical structure:
“The seven-story NUPENG Tower symbolizes our collective aspirations and achievements, providing a conducive and effective workspace for our staff to better serve our members.”

A Platform for Workers’ Advocacy

The commissioning ceremony will provide an opportunity for President Tinubu to address workers on the importance of the oil and gas industry to Nigeria’s economy. NUPENG sees this event as a platform to foster collaboration between the government and the working class in achieving the nation’s development goals.

About NUPENG

Established over 40 years ago, NUPENG is one of Nigeria’s most prominent trade unions, affiliated with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Industrial Global Union. The union has consistently championed workers’ rights, improved working conditions, and sustainable practices in the oil and gas sector.

Comrade Olawale emphasized the importance of the union’s solidarity:
“Our solidarity remains constant because the union makes us strong!”
