The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has emphasized the urgent need for justice and stronger accountability systems in Nigeria following the alleged extra-judicial killing of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi.

Speaking before lawmakers, Akpabio described the incident as deeply troubling, stating that it challenges the ethical foundation of the country and requires immediate attention from both legislative authorities and security institutions.

Before proceeding with legislative duties, he addressed the chamber, highlighting the tragic loss of Mene Ogidi, a young Nigerian whose death has sparked widespread concern.

According to reports, Ogidi, who hails from Ujevwu in Udu Local Government Area, was fatally shot on April 26, 2026, under circumstances that have raised serious questions about the use of force by law enforcement officers. The incident has since triggered public outrage and renewed debates surrounding police brutality in the country.

On behalf of the Senate and the National Assembly, Akpabio extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, the people of Ujevwu, and Nigerians who have been affected by the tragic event.

He stressed that every Nigerian life holds equal value and must be safeguarded by law, regardless of social standing, geographical location, or personal circumstances. According to him, the strength and unity of the nation depend largely on citizens’ confidence in institutions responsible for their protection.

Akpabio further noted that trust is the backbone of any functioning society. Citizens must believe that those in uniform are there to protect them, not to cause harm. He added that authority should always be exercised responsibly and not abused, while justice must be timely, impartial, and evident to all.

The Senate President acknowledged that the Nigerian Police Force has reportedly taken initial steps by identifying, dismissing, and initiating prosecution against officers allegedly linked to the incident. He described these actions as a positive signal that misconduct will not be tolerated and that accountability remains essential in a democratic society.

However, he cautioned that these preliminary measures should not mark the end of the process. Instead, they must lead to a comprehensive and transparent judicial outcome that assures Nigerians that justice is truly served.

He reiterated that citizens expect a process that is thorough, open, and credible—one that not only delivers justice but also demonstrates it clearly.

Akpabio called for a renewed national commitment to upholding the rule of law and strengthening institutions. He emphasized that while law enforcement agencies should be properly equipped and supported, they must also be held to the highest standards of accountability.

In his words, the tragic moment should serve as a reminder of the importance of protecting human life and reinforcing the principles that uphold the nation’s legal and moral framework.

He also urged the senator representing the affected constituency to formally convey the Senate’s condolences to the grieving family. Additionally, he called on relevant authorities to ensure a full investigation into the incident while pushing forward broader reforms within the police system.

Akpabio concluded by expressing hope that the unfortunate event would inspire collective action toward building a nation where justice is impartial, institutions are trustworthy, and citizens can live without fear.

To honor the memory of the deceased, the Senate observed a minute of silence, while calls for accountability and meaningful security reforms continue to intensify across the country.

Investigations into the case are still ongoing, with authorities assuring the public that those responsible will be identified and brought to justice.
