The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Akwa Ibom State has strongly denied allegations circulating online accusing its leadership of financial misconduct, economic sabotage, staff victimisation and poor collaboration with other security agencies.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the command described the allegations as baseless and misleading, insisting that the claims do not reflect the realities within the organisation.
Command Responds to Online Allegations
The controversy followed the circulation of social media reports alleging that the Akwa Ibom State Command, led by Commandant Geraldine Abetianbe, was involved in financial irregularities and had created a strained working environment for personnel and other security agencies operating in the state.
Responding to the allegations, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SC Friday Ekerete, dismissed the reports as false, malicious and unsupported by facts.
According to the spokesperson, the claims appear designed to misinform the public and undermine the command’s operations rather than present verified information.
NSCDC Explains Staff Welfare Scheme
Addressing concerns over an alleged staff welfare deduction scheme, the command clarified that the initiative was already in existence before Commandant Geraldine Abetianbe assumed office in December 2025.
The command explained that after her arrival, the welfare programme was expanded to cover all personnel following a unanimous decision reached during a muster parade at the State Command Headquarters. Representatives from different ranks were subsequently selected to oversee the scheme.
Officials stated that deductions applied to every participating officer, including the State Commandant herself. However, after some personnel expressed dissatisfaction with the arrangement, all affected staff reportedly received refunds and the welfare scheme was discontinued.
The command maintained that these actions demonstrate transparency and responsiveness to staff concerns rather than financial misconduct.
Why Operational Equipment Has Not Yet Been Distributed
The NSCDC also responded to accusations that recently acquired technological equipment, including drones and operational system packs, had been deliberately withheld.
According to the command, the equipment remains undistributed because personnel must first undergo specialised training conducted by experts from the NSCDC National Headquarters before deployment.
Officials said the technology is intended for sensitive security operations and must be handled in accordance with established operational procedures and national policy.
The command stressed that the delay is part of standard security protocols designed to ensure the equipment is used effectively and safely.
Command Rejects Claims of Staff Victimisation
The command further dismissed allegations of bias in appointments and victimisation of officers with differing opinions.
It explained that the NSCDC operates as a federal institution where postings and appointments are guided by the federal character principle, merit, qualifications and operational experience.
According to the statement, several strategic departments within the Akwa Ibom State Command—including Operations, Anti-Vandal, Private Guard Companies, Solid Minerals, Medical Services, Armoury and Stores—are headed by qualified personnel from Akwa Ibom State, while officers from other states also occupy leadership positions in line with federal service regulations.
The command said these appointments can be independently verified.
Relationship With Other Security Agencies
Responding to claims of a breakdown in cooperation with sister security organisations, the NSCDC said it continues to maintain a productive working relationship with other security agencies across Akwa Ibom State.
The command described the inter-agency relationship as cordial and collaborative, noting that effective security operations depend on continuous cooperation among federal and state security institutions.
