Nigerian Army Dismantles Illegal Refineries and Seizes Stolen Diesel

In a decisive effort to combat oil theft and protect Nigeria’s resources, the Nigerian Army has successfully dismantled 19 illegal refining sites and confiscated over 170,000 litres of stolen Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) in a series of operations across the Niger Delta.

Collaborative Crackdown

Between December 2 and 8, 2024, troops from the Nigerian Army’s 6 Division, working in collaboration with other security agencies, executed targeted operations aimed at dismantling oil theft networks. The operations resulted in significant arrests, seizure of equipment, and recovery of stolen resources.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Danjuma Jonah Danjuma, Acting Deputy Director of 6 Division Army Public Relations, the operations also led to the demobilisation of 21 boats used in crude theft and the confiscation of various tools used for illegal oil bunkering.


Key Successes Across the Niger Delta

Rivers State

  • Okarki, Ahoada West LGA: Troops intercepted Cotonou boats loaded with over 34,000 litres of illegally refined AGO.
  • Ogbonga Forest, Bonny Island LGA: An illegal refining site with over 30,000 litres of stolen crude oil was uncovered.

Bayelsa State

  • Kalabilema, Nembe: Dismantling of a site containing 2,000 litres of illegally refined AGO.
  • Igbomotoru Creek, Southern Ijaw: Discovery of an illegal refining site and a wooden boat suspected of being used for oil theft.

Akwa Ibom State

  • Enwang II, Mbo LGA: Troops intercepted 43 drums, each containing 280 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), totaling 12,040 litres. The products were believed to be en route to a neighbouring country.

Delta State

  • Koko, Warri LGA: Four suspects were arrested while transporting 35 drums of black oil (over 7,000 litres) in a Mercedes Benz truck.
