The Nigeria Basketball Federation has officially confirmed the appointment of David Fizdale as the new head coach of Nigeria’s senior men’s basketball team, D’Tigres.
The appointment was approved following recommendations from the federation’s technical committee as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the national basketball structure and improve team performance on the international stage.
Fizdale, a highly experienced basketball tactician from the United States, has spent the majority of his professional career coaching in the National Basketball Association. Over the years, he has worked with several top NBA franchises and built a reputation for tactical discipline, player management, and team development.
The 51-year-old coach began his professional coaching journey with the San Diego Toreros men’s basketball in 1998, where he started gaining valuable experience in basketball management and technical development.
Before his appointment by the NBBF, Fizdale served as an assistant coach with the Phoenix Suns. He departed the organization last year after contributing to the team’s technical setup and player improvement programs.
Beyond leading D’Tigres, the federation believes Fizdale’s arrival will positively impact the overall growth of basketball in Nigeria. His role is expected to extend beyond match preparation, as he will also contribute to coaching education, player development systems, and technical advancement within the Nigerian basketball ecosystem.
The NBBF views the appointment as an important step toward repositioning Nigerian basketball for greater international competitiveness.
