According to her: “As we speak, 7,000 Nigerians are stranded in Libya. A heart-wrenching tragedy struck the community of Samaru in Zaria, Kaduna State, as a young and promising student, Miss Praise Malachi, lost her life to devastating floodwaters. Praise, a 16-year-old final-year student of Government Day Secondary School, was reportedly swept away while hurrying home to confirm her outstanding performance in the recently released Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE). How the Incident Happened According to eyewitness accounts, the brilliant teenager had just received exciting news from her classmates that she passed her SSCE exams with excellent results. Around 6:00 pm after a heavy rainfall, her friends visited her father’s shop to share the good news. Overjoyed, Praise rushed home to check the result online using her mobile phone. Unfortunately, on her way home, she attempted to cross a swollen stream formed by severe erosion and flooding in the area. In that moment, she slipped, fell into the current, and was carried away by the raging floodwaters. Her father, Mr. Emmanuel Malachi, narrated in grief: “After hearing the good news, Praise rushed home to check her results on her phone. While crossing the river caused by erosion, she slipped, fell into it, and was taken away by the flood. Her body was later recovered the next day in Hunkuyi, Kudan Local Government Area.” Community Reactions and Environmental Concerns Neighbours of the deceased, Danladi Mudi and Emma Yashi, confirmed that the erosion in Samaru has long been a serious environmental challenge. They noted that several residents have previously lost their lives during the rainy season due to unchecked flooding. Yashi added with concern: “Praise was not the only child who died in the flood. A six-year-old boy identified as Mohammed Mohammed, who was rescued from child traffickers in Nigeria last month, has successfully undergone a delicate surgical procedure after developing a severe medical condition known as pyomyositis. Pyomyositis is a bacterial infection of the muscles that often results in the formation of abscesses — dangerous pockets of pus within the body. Medical experts link the boy’s illness to the severe beatings inflicted on him by the traffickers before he was rescued alongside 12 other abducted children. According to reports, the children were kidnapped from different communities in Adamawa State and later transported to Anambra State, where they were being held before security operatives intervened. Medical Diagnosis and Surgery During a medical assessment at the Specialist Hospital, Yola, where all 13 rescued children were admitted for care, doctors confirmed that young Mohammed was suffering from pyomyositis caused by the physical trauma he endured. The hospital disclosed on Monday that the boy required urgent surgical intervention to remove the infected abscesses in his thighs. The update was shared during a visit by Professor Kaletapwa Farauta, Deputy Governor of Adamawa State, who personally checked on the boy’s recovery. Speaking to the press, Farauta explained: “We are here for a follow-up on the boy who was abducted and trafficked to Anambra State. The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), operating under the Kirikiri Lighter Terminal (KLT) Command, has intercepted two 40-foot containers filled with expired pharmaceutical products, with a Duty Paid Value (DPV) of N130 million. The interception was announced by the Customs Area Controller, KLT Command, Comptroller Eghosa Edelduok, during a press briefing in Lagos over the weekend. The disclosure was made while presenting the Command’s official performance report for the first half of 2025. According to Comptroller Edelduok, the seized containers, identified with registration numbers HLBU 1067338 and HLBU 2239792, were intercepted by the enforcement team of the Command during routine anti-smuggling operations. She emphasized that the consignment of expired drugs contravened the provisions of the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023, as well as other relevant Nigerian importation laws designed to safeguard public health and safety. “The intercepted containers, loaded with expired pharmaceutical drugs, have been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and necessary action,” Edelduok confirmed. She reiterated that the seizure reflects the Command’s zero-tolerance stance against illegal importation, stressing that protecting Nigerians from harmful goods remains a core mandate of the NCS. Revenue Performance in the First Half of 2025 While addressing the Command’s operational results, Comptroller Edelduok highlighted a significant revenue achievement. She reported that the KLT Command generated N89.2 billion between January and June 2025, showing a remarkable 63% increase when compared with the N54.8 billion recorded in the same period in 2024. She explained that the difference of N34.4 billion was attributed to: This, according to her, demonstrates the impact of reforms and the renewed drive of the Customs Service towards boosting national revenue mobilization. Authorities in Illinois have confirmed the discovery of the remains of Olasinmibo Abosede, a Nigerian woman popularly known as Sinmi, who had been reported missing since July 30. According to a joint announcement by the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County and the Naperville Police Department, her body was located on Thursday at approximately 1:55 p.m. in the Springbrook Prairie Forest Preserve, close to the intersection of 83rd Street and Chandelle Drive. Investigators revealed that the clothing found on the deceased corresponded with what the 42-year-old was last seen wearing on the day of her disappearance. Timeline of Disappearance Abosede, who lived near the Springbrook Golf Course, reportedly left her residence for a morning walk on July 30. Surveillance footage captured her around 9:20 a.m. in the 2100 block of Sudbury Street, dressed in a black Adidas jacket, grey sweatpants, a black headscarf, and black Crocs. Police Chief Jason Arres of Naperville stated: “While we believe the recovered individual to be Sinmi, the official identification will be confirmed by the DuPage County Coroner’s Office.” Ongoing Investigation Authorities emphasized that there is currently no indication of foul play in her death. However, an autopsy is scheduled to be performed by the coroner’s office to determine the official cause. The investigation is being conducted jointly by Naperville Police and Forest Preserve District Police.
