There was widespread panic in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, following an explosion that occurred at a mosque in the Gamboru Ward area of the city. The blast is believed to have been caused by an improvised explosive device allegedly planted by suspected Boko Haram insurgents.

The explosion reportedly took place at a Juma’at Mosque located close to the Customs area, a busy part of Maiduguri. The incident happened on Wednesday evening while Muslim faithful were in the middle of observing the Maghrib prayer, a time when worshippers usually gather in large numbers.

Although exact casualty figures have not been officially confirmed, residents fear that several lives may have been lost due to the timing and location of the blast. As of the time this report was put together, details surrounding the incident remained unclear, with authorities still working to gather accurate information.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Borno State, ASP Nahum Daso, stated that he could not immediately verify the explosion. However, he confirmed that he was on his way to the scene to personally assess the situation and provide an official update.

The suspected attack has heightened tension across Maiduguri, creating anxiety among residents. Reports indicate that the fear is particularly noticeable within the Christian community, who are currently preparing for the 2025 Christmas celebrations amid ongoing security concerns in the region.

In response to the incident, security operatives swiftly moved to the affected area and sealed it off. The cordon was put in place to prevent additional casualties and to enable an initial evaluation of the scene by security and emergency officials.

Authorities are expected to release more details as investigations continue and the situation becomes clearer.
