Lagos Govt Removes Roadside Markets Along Ikotun–Igando Corridor

The Lagos State Government has carried out a clearance operation targeting roadside markets situated along the Ikotun–Igando Road within Alimosho Local Government Area.

The enforcement exercise took place on Saturday and focused on removing trading activities positioned directly on road setbacks and traffic-prone sections of the corridor. The action forms part of the state’s ongoing effort to restore order, improve environmental standards, and ease vehicular movement on major roads.

Confirmation of the operation was provided by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab. The commissioner disclosed the development through a statement shared on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, where he also posted video clips documenting the exercise.

According to the information released, the operation was conducted on December 20, 2025. Areas affected by the clearance included Ikotun Main Market, Igando Market, as well as several informal trading spots operating along the Ikotun–Igando axis.

The affected corridor is known for heavy human and vehicular traffic, with roadside trading frequently causing congestion, environmental degradation, and safety concerns. The removal of these markets aligns with existing state regulations prohibiting commercial activities on highways, drainage channels, and road setbacks.

Officials involved in the exercise emphasized that the operation was aimed at enforcing environmental laws rather than targeting individuals. Traders were removed from unauthorized locations to discourage practices that obstruct traffic flow and compromise public safety.

The Lagos State Government has consistently warned against roadside trading, urging traders to operate within approved markets and designated commercial spaces. Authorities maintain that compliance with environmental regulations is necessary to sustain urban order and infrastructure functionality across the metropolis.
