Kogi State Strengthens Crime Prevention Measures

The Kogi State Government has adopted a proactive crime-fighting approach, no longer waiting for criminal attacks before responding with decisive actions.

Ismaila Isah, the Special Adviser on Media to Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, shared these updates during an interview on TrustTV’s Daily Politics program. He revealed that Governor Ododo has initiated continuous operations targeting criminal elements within and around the state.

“Rather than waiting for criminals to attack, we have taken the fight to their hideouts. Kogi is perhaps the only state in Nigeria consistently pursuing this offensive strategy,” Isah emphasized.

He disclosed that ongoing clearance operations are being conducted along Kogi’s borders with states such as Kwara, Ekiti, Nasarawa, Benue, and Ondo. As a state sharing borders with nine regions, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Kogi has maintained consistent security efforts across forested regions where criminal elements often take refuge.

Collaboration with Neighboring States and Security Agencies
Isah highlighted that Kogi’s security strategy includes cooperation with neighboring state governments. Before launching any operations, Kogi ensures that the governors of these states are informed to coordinate efforts for greater efficiency in safeguarding border areas.

The state also collaborates closely with national security bodies, including the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA), the Nigerian military, and other security agencies.

Enhanced Security Resources and Vigilante Empowerment
Governor Ododo’s administration has significantly boosted security logistics since taking office, providing over 300 vehicles and hundreds of motorcycles for security operations. Additionally, nearly 3,000 vigilante members and local hunters have been recruited and are now receiving salaries above the national minimum wage.

The state’s vigilante network has been restructured and strengthened, ensuring better effectiveness in crime prevention.

Legacy of the Previous Administration
Isah acknowledged the foundational security efforts laid by former Governor Yahaya Bello. Bello’s administration overhauled the state’s security architecture, earning recognition as the best-performing governor in security management for multiple years. Governor Ododo’s leadership continues to build on these achievements.

The collaboration between Governor Ododo and military and paramilitary leaders in Kogi has fostered a productive security environment. Isah praised the courage and professionalism of security personnel in the state, noting their unwavering commitment to public safety.

Clarification on Mining Restrictions
Regarding the reported ban on mining activities, Isah clarified that the Kogi State Government only suspended local licensing due to the dangers posed by illegal mining. This measure aimed to restore order within the extractive sector. Now that security conditions have improved, the state is prepared to welcome legitimate investors.
