Kano Government Suspends Urban Planning Chief Amid Probe Into Development Irregularities

The Kano State Government has taken a significant step in its ongoing urban reform drive by suspending the Managing Director of the Kano State Urban Planning and Development Authority (KNUPDA), Arc. Hauwa Hassan Tudun-wada, following allegations of irregularities linked to physical planning and development control within the state.

The decision, approved by the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, signals a renewed push to tighten oversight in the state’s rapidly expanding urban areas, where concerns over unauthorized construction and land-use violations have been growing.

The committee was constituted through the office of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Umar Faruk Ibrahim, and is expected to carry out a detailed assessment of planning approvals, enforcement practices, and internal administrative procedures.

Leading the panel is Dr. Dalhatu Aliyu Sani, Director-General of the Kano Geographic Information System (KANGIS), an agency responsible for spatial data management and land administration in the state.

Kano Geographic Information System (KANGIS) also oversees the Kano State Special Task Force on Illegal Structures, which has been actively involved in identifying and documenting unauthorized developments.

Officials Ordered to Step Aside

In a related clarification from the Office of the Secretary to the State Government, the government confirmed that both the KNUPDA Managing Director and the Director of Architecture have been directed to step aside temporarily.

The directive, according to Press Secretary Musa Tanko Muhammad, is intended to ensure transparency and allow investigators unrestricted access to documents and operational records during the review process.
