The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has officially inaugurated the Light Up Abuja Project: Lots I & II, a major initiative designed to modernize street lighting across the capital city. The flag-off ceremony took place on Thursday and marked the beginning of a transformative phase in Abuja’s infrastructural development.

According to the FCT administration, the new solar-powered streetlight system will cover key districts and major expressways in Abuja, ensuring improved visibility, enhanced security, and more sustainable energy usage across the city. This project is part of the government’s broader commitment to promote renewable energy solutions while reducing reliance on the national electricity grid.

Nyesom Wike emphasized that street lighting plays a vital role in urban safety, economic activity, and city aesthetics, noting that Abuja deserves world-class infrastructure befitting its status as Nigeria’s capital. He explained that the project will not only enhance the beauty of Abuja at night but also contribute to crime prevention and safer road usage for motorists and pedestrians.

The Minister further assured residents that the administration is committed to accountability and quality delivery, stressing that the Light Up Abuja Project will be closely monitored to ensure timely completion and durability. By using solar technology, the project is also expected to significantly cut electricity costs while contributing to Nigeria’s climate change and green energy goals.

The initiative comes at a time when cities across the world are shifting toward renewable energy streetlight systems to promote sustainability and reduce environmental footprints.
