Fenerbahçe’s head coach, Jose Mourinho, has openly revealed the team he considers the most dangerous contender in this season’s UEFA Europa League.

According to the Portuguese tactician, FC Porto stand out as the side with the strength and consistency required to dominate the tournament. Mourinho noted that Porto’s current form makes them the team to beat this season.

Fenerbahçe, who were placed in Pot 2 ahead of the Europa League group stage draw scheduled for Friday, will also be part of the competition after falling short in their Champions League playoff run.

On Wednesday night, Mourinho’s men were edged out by Benfica in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League qualifying tie. The Turkish giants suffered a narrow 1–0 defeat, forcing them to drop into Europe’s secondary tournament.

This season’s Europa League promises fierce competition, with notable clubs such as Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest, Celtic, Rangers, FC Porto, and Fenerbahçe battling it out for the prestigious trophy.

During his post-match interview after the Benfica clash, Mourinho addressed the club’s ambitions and acknowledged the gap between Champions League and Europa League competition:

“We have not won the domestic league in years, and that remains a primary objective. However, the Europa League is a competition that matches our capabilities better. Last year, we had a solid run, only to be eliminated on penalties after an outstanding performance in Glasgow.”

The former AS Roma and Manchester United boss added:

*“This season, we aim to progress even further. The Europa League still has strong teams, but the intensity is different compared to the Champions League. That said, *FC Porto are present, and they are extremely strong—very strong.”

With Mourinho’s experience in European tournaments and Fenerbahçe’s renewed determination, all eyes are set on how far the Turkish side can advance. However, his remarks underline the respect and recognition he holds for Porto, a team he once managed successfully in his early career, famously winning the 2004 Champions League with them.
