There’s encouraging news from Nottingham Forest as Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi has regained consciousness after being placed in a medically induced coma, according to a report by Mail Sport.
The 27-year-old Super Eagles forward is now in the process of recovery after undergoing a critical abdominal surgery. The operation, described as both urgent and complicated, was performed to address a potentially life-threatening injury.
On Wednesday night, Awoniyi was still in intensive care following the surgical procedure. The seriousness of the condition had sparked concern among football supporters and analysts, many of whom took to social media to express their prayers and support for his recovery.
Medical professionals have now successfully completed the surgical intervention, and Awoniyi is being closely monitored in a hospital setting. Encouragingly, he has regained consciousness post-surgery and is currently surrounded by family members, offering him emotional support.
The incident that led to the injury occurred during Nottingham Forest’s dramatic 2-2 draw against Leicester City over the weekend. Awoniyi had collided with the goalpost during the match. Despite receiving immediate medical attention on the pitch, he chose to keep playing for a while, showcasing immense bravery.
Unfortunately, he was not immediately substituted due to the team having exhausted their substitution slots — with the final change made by coach Nuno Espirito Santo, who brought on Jota Silva in place of Elliot Anderson.
