EPL: Maresca Suggests Sanchez Should Have Allowed Mbeumo Goal Instead of Risking Red Card

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has expressed his disappointment over goalkeeper Robert Sánchez’s early dismissal, suggesting it would have been wiser to allow Bryan Mbeumo to score rather than reducing the team to ten men.

The incident occurred just four minutes into Chelsea’s 2-1 Premier League defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday. Sánchez was shown a straight red card after charging out and colliding with Mbeumo, who was racing through on goal.

Reflecting on the incident, Maresca admitted that although conceding so early would have been frustrating, keeping a full squad on the pitch for the remaining 90 minutes would have offered Chelsea a better chance of securing a result.

“It was better to allow Mbeumo to score than to get the red card,” Maresca explained.

“We still had 95 minutes to play, and Robert Sánchez knows this. It is not easy, but if you ask me, I prefer to be one goal down after five minutes than one player down for the whole match.”

The red card left Chelsea struggling to cope with Manchester United’s pressure, eventually leading to their defeat despite showing resilience. Maresca’s remarks highlight the importance of maintaining numerical balance in top-level football, especially in a highly competitive English Premier League fixture.

This debate on whether goalkeepers should sometimes concede rather than risk dismissal has been common in football, as playing with ten men often drastically reduces a team’s chances of winning.
