The head coach of Nigeria’s home-based Super Eagles, Eric Chelle, has outlined three critical areas the team must enhance following their 1-0 loss to Senegal in the opening match of Group D at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

Chelle witnessed his squad fall to a narrow defeat against Senegal on Tuesday evening at the Amani Stadium in Tanzania. The match was decided by a lone goal in the second half, scored by Senegalese player Christian Gomis, sealing a vital three points for the West African side.

According to a report by LMSINT MEDIA, the tightly contested match exposed specific weaknesses in the Nigerian team’s performance, prompting Chelle to make a candid assessment during his post-match media briefing.

During the press conference, the Malian-born tactician emphasized that the Super Eagles must work on their mental readiness, competitive edge, and aggressiveness if they aim to perform better in their remaining group matches at the continental tournament.

“So we need to improve our state of mind. We need to be more competitive, and more aggressive,” Chelle remarked as he addressed journalists following the defeat.

He concluded his thoughts on a note of cautious optimism, stating, “We will see.”

The loss has placed Nigeria in a more challenging position in Group D, making the upcoming matches decisive for qualification to the knockout stages.

Looking ahead, Nigeria is scheduled to face Sudan next Tuesday in their second CHAN group fixture. Following that encounter, the team will battle Congo in what will be their final group-stage match, where qualification hopes may hang in the balance.

With adjustments needed across these three areas — mental focus, on-field competitiveness, and physical aggression — the coaching team will need to implement immediate tactical and psychological improvements to turn their CHAN 2024 campaign around.
