Former England international and football pundit, Joe Cole, has expressed strong confidence in Chelsea’s ability to challenge for the UEFA Champions League crown this season.
Speaking during an interview with TNT Sports, Cole described his former club as one of the competition’s “dark horses”—teams not widely expected to dominate but capable of surprising the favorites.
The 2025 Champions League will feature six Premier League teams, representing one of the strongest English contingents in years. These clubs are:
- Chelsea
- Arsenal
- Liverpool
- Manchester City
- Newcastle United
- Tottenham Hotspur
Last season, Arsenal carried the Premier League’s hopes furthest, advancing all the way to the semi-finals before being eliminated by eventual winners, Paris Saint-Germain. Mikel Arteta’s men impressed but narrowly missed out on a place in the final.
When rating Chelsea’s chances, Joe Cole emphasized the unpredictable nature of knockout football, explaining that individual performances could be decisive. He particularly highlighted the importance of goalkeeper Robert Sánchez, suggesting that his consistency might determine whether Chelsea can progress deep into the competition.
“I’d place them just above the category of dark horses and slightly below the clubs tipped to be favorites. It really depends on the goalkeeper Sanchez and how well he performs in high-pressure games,” Cole stated.
With six English clubs competing, the Premier League’s representation in Europe’s top tournament underscores the league’s depth of quality and competitiveness. Fans will be eager to see whether one of these giants can secure the trophy and bring it back to England.
