Former Premier League midfielder Jamie Redknapp has strongly criticized Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta for what he described as a “big risk” during their Carabao Cup fixture against Port Vale on Wednesday night.

Redknapp, who is now a football pundit, questioned Arteta’s tactical decision-making in the game, insisting that it “doesn’t make sense” for a top-flight manager to make such a call in a domestic cup competition.

According to Redknapp, Arsenal’s boss risked jeopardizing the team’s balance with the choices he made, even though the Gunners secured victory at Port Vale. The former Liverpool and Tottenham player stressed that in a knockout competition like the Carabao Cup, managers need to be cautious, as one wrong move can undo the team’s hard work.

He further explained that while Arsenal ultimately came out on top, the situation could have easily turned against them. Redknapp maintained that the approach taken by Arteta was unnecessary and exposed the team to potential setbacks that could have been avoided with more measured decisions.

The Carabao Cup win may have brought progression for the North London side, but Redknapp’s criticism highlighted growing scrutiny around Arteta’s strategies in cup competitions, especially when dealing with lower-league opponents like Port Vale.
