Boko Haram Attack in Yobe: Insurgents Burn Four Vehicles, Destroy Traders’ Goods in Geidam Raid

Residents of Geidam in Yobe State are assessing fresh losses after suspected Boko Haram insurgents launched a pre-dawn attack that left four vehicles destroyed, including government-owned vehicles and commercial trucks carrying goods belonging to local traders.

The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Friday, has renewed concerns over the security situation in parts of northeastern Nigeria, despite ongoing military operations against insurgent groups operating across the region.

Early Morning Attack Targets Government Property and Commercial Vehicles

According to eyewitness accounts, the attackers entered Geidam town at approximately 4:30 a.m. when most residents were still asleep. Their first reported destination was the Geidam Local Government Secretariat, where they allegedly set fire to two official vehicles—a Toyota Hilux pickup and a Sharon bus belonging to the local government.

After leaving the secretariat, the armed men reportedly moved toward nearby commercial vehicles parked close to the weekly market area.

One of the trucks was said to be fully loaded with merchandise valued at millions of naira. The goods reportedly belonged to traders who had concluded business at the Geidam weekly market and planned to continue their journey later that morning.

Witnesses said the truck and its contents were completely destroyed by fire. Another articulated truck parked within the market vicinity was also set ablaze, bringing the total number of vehicles destroyed during the raid to four.

Community members who spoke after the incident claimed the attackers appeared to have altered their usual approach.

According to residents, the suspected insurgents reportedly abandoned their motorcycles outside the town before proceeding on foot, a move they believe was intended to reduce noise and avoid early detection by security personnel.

Witnesses also suggested the attackers appeared familiar with their intended targets, moving directly to specific locations before setting the vehicles on fire.

Traders Count Heavy Financial Losses

Although no reports of fatalities emerged from the attack, the destruction of commercial goods has dealt a significant financial blow to affected traders.

The weekly market in Geidam serves as an important commercial hub for traders within Yobe State and neighboring communities. The loss of goods worth millions of naira is expected to affect the livelihoods of business owners who rely on the market for income.

Residents have appealed to both the Federal Government and the Yobe State Government to reinforce security in vulnerable communities by providing security agencies with additional personnel, surveillance capabilities, and operational resources.

The spokesperson for the Yobe State Police Command, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, confirmed that the attack occurred.
