Rising Nigerian music star Ayra Starr has humorously declared herself the “first African” to take a bathroom selfie at the prestigious Met Gala, during a recent sit-down with Billboard.

The Rush crooner opened up about the stories behind some of her most memorable photos, including a trending bathroom snapshot with American singer Coco Jones and fellow Nigerian artist Tems. In a playful tone, Ayra asserted that despite Tems also appearing in the picture, she considers herself the original African selfie queen of the Met Gala.

“First African to take a bathroom selfie at the MET Gala, period!” she exclaimed, laughing.

Ayra Starr made her grand debut at the 2025 Met Gala, hosted at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City on May 5, 2025.

She was among a powerful wave of African creatives who graced the event, joining internationally acclaimed figures like Afro-fusion sensation Burna Boy, Grammy-nominated singer Tems, South African pop star Tyla, award-winning author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and fashion icon Swanky Jerry.

Ayra’s attendance not only marked a milestone in her career but also contributed to the growing visibility and influence of African stars in global pop culture and high fashion.
