Pastor Chris Oyakhilome DSc DSc DD Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions (Hebrews 11:33). In 1 Kings 3, we read about Solomon offering one thousand burnt offerings to God. As a result, God appeared to him that night and said, “…Ask what I shall give thee” (1 Kings 3:5). Solomon was only required to offer one burnt offering, but he went above and beyond, offering a thousand. As a result, he received divine attention. Realizing the power of his offering, the next time he was to offer oblation to the Lord, he made it 22,000 burnt offerings. And once again, God responded by speaking to him and granting him promises. Also consider the example of Noah in Genesis 8. After the Flood, Noah’s first act was to build an altar and offer burnt offerings of every clean beast and bird. The Bible says, “And the LORD smelled a sweet savour…” and as a result, God made a promise: “…I will not again curse the ground any more for man’s sake…” (Genesis 8:21). Noah’s offering was like incense rising to heaven, a sweet-smelling aroma for which God released promises and blessings for Noah and his sons, giving them dominion over all the earth: “…Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth…into your hand are they delivered” (Genesis 9:1-2). Similarly, the Lord Jesus obtained promises through His sacrificial death for us on the Cross. Following His obedience and vicarious sacrifice, the Bible says,“Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name” (Philippians 2:9). Jesus obtained dominion over all because He was obedient in offering Himself. The Bible speaks of others who also obtained promises through their faith and actions as read in our opening scripture. The Greek word for promise in that verse is “epaggelia,” which means to get an announcement of something good that God has given you. This principle remains the same; you too can cause God to announce something good for you through your sacrificial offering, through the power of faith and the principle of sacrifice. It’s one of the reasons why giving to God is so important. You can be praying and He’ll say something to you in your spirit just as in the examples above. Hallelujah! As the Father has life in Himself, so has He given the Son to have life in Himself. I have the Son; therefore, I have life! My body only expresses God’s glory and beauty. My body is God’s temple, and I am its steward. I’m Spirit-ruled and Word-governed. I see through the Word, understand by the Word, and renew my mind with the Word. I’m cultured by the Word for the life of the Kingdom. The Word of God controls my values, ideas, opinions, choices and decisions. He further clarified: “As of this morning, the judiciary leaders have refused to pay their workers. The judiciary is an independent arm of government. Our duty is to remit funds to their account, and their duty is to pay their workers.” Additionally, the governor stated that he had approved an extra ₦27 million for the judiciary workers and even ensured the payment of their thirteenth-month salary. Despite these payments, the strike persists, leading Otti to question the union’s motives. His leadership has since contributed significantly to the stability of the Okrika region. Dokubo-Asari: Leading Torusarama Piri Mujahid Dokubo-Asari, a vocal figure from the Kalabari ethnic group, transitioned from militant leader to the Amanyanabo of Torusarama Piri in December 2024. Lagos Police Dismantle Uber Driver Killer Gangs, Arrest Seven Suspects The Lagos State Police Command has successfully dismantled robbery gangs targeting Uber drivers, with the arrest of seven suspects involved in separate criminal groups. Among the apprehended is a gang of four, including a U.S. returnee, linked to the tragic murder of an Uber driver during a robbery attempt on Thursday, January 9, 2025. The suspects aimed to steal the driver’s Toyota Camry after fatally stabbing him. Commissioner of Police, CP Olarewaju Ishola, disclosed this during a press briefing at the Lagos Police Command Headquarters on January 10, 2025. He detailed how the suspects—Emeka Akwara (19), David Segun (21), Samuel Ariori (21), and Lukman Ariori (19)—booked a ride from Chevron in Lekki to Obalende around midnight. Upon reaching a secluded area in Obalende, they attacked the driver, stabbing him multiple times in the neck. Fortunately, the stolen vehicle was not taken due to the intervention of concerned passersby who apprehended two suspects on the spot. Further investigation led to the arrest of the other two gang members hiding in the Chevron area. The deceased’s body was later taken to the Mainland Hospital, Yaba, for further examination. Similar Case Uncovered In a related development, the police also arrested three suspects—Edmond Julius (34), Abdullahi Umar (32), and Saturday Oke (40)—for the murder of another Uber driver, Oluwaseyi Fowler, three months earlier. This gang kidnapped Fowler in the Ajah area, robbed him of his Toyota Camry, and eventually killed him. The suspects confessed to selling the stolen vehicle and led the police to recover both the decomposed body of the victim and the car. Security Advisory for Uber Drivers Commissioner Ishola emphasized the importance of safety measures for Uber drivers, urging them to carry only one passenger at a time, thoroughly search passengers before rides, and encourage them to sit in the front seat for better visibility. He further announced plans to roll out security guidelines specifically aimed at protecting drivers from becoming crime victims. Lagos Rated the Safest State During Festive Season Addressing the security situation in Lagos during the Yuletide season, CP Ishola declared Lagos as the most secure state in Nigeria. He highlighted that approximately 500,000 Nigerians from the diaspora returned home during the festive season, with 90% staying in Lagos without major incidents. “This level of security success was achieved through the directives of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Olukayode Ebetokun, and the supportive efforts of Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu,” Ishola stated. Sharia Panel Debate Intensifies in South-West Nigeria Tensions have risen across South-West Nigeria following the proposed establishment of Sharia panels in Oyo State. While Muslim leaders emphasize their constitutional right to religious self-determination, some non-Muslim groups have raised concerns over the broader implications of these panels on societal cohesion. The core issue revolves around the difference between Sharia panels and Sharia courts. Sharia panels, as explained by Muslim leaders, are arbitration committees focusing on civil matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, and contract disputes among Muslims. On the other hand, Sharia courts are part of the judicial system in the predominantly Muslim Northern Nigeria. Origins of the Controversy The situation escalated when the Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria (SCSN) announced plans to establish a Sharia panel in Oyo town, Oyo State. However, after public backlash, the council indefinitely postponed the panel’s inauguration. Key Muslim figures such as the Basorun of Oyoland, High Chief Yusuf Akinade Olayinka, and Alhaji Tajudeen Abdul-Hammed Kamorise were expected at the ceremony. Despite the suspension, a non-Muslim group, Yoruba Council Worldwide, threatened legal action unless the initiative was abandoned entirely. Defense from Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) refuted the opposition, clarifying that the Sharia panel is not a judicial court but a voluntary arbitration body. The organization stated that such panels have been operational in the South-West since 2003, operating from mosques without any government funding or enforcement powers. According to MURIC’s Director, Prof. Ishaq Akintola: “What Oyo Muslims plan to inaugurate is not a Sharia court but a Sharia panel. Panels have existed for years in Yorubaland, serving as arbitration forums for Muslims without enforcing decisions or compelling non-Muslims to participate.” Historical Context and Legal Standing Historically, Sharia arbitration has been part of Yorubaland. Oba Abibu Olagunju of Ede employed Qadi Sindiku for a Sharia court as far back as 1913, while similar structures existed in Iwo and Ikirun. The constitutional framework also allows such practices under Sections 275(1), 276, and 277 of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution. Oyo State Government’s Position Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde clarified that while religious freedom is protected, the state would not permit any illegal judicial structure. His spokesperson emphasized that the Sharia panel must operate within Nigeria’s legal framework. Clarification on Sharia Panels and Courts Legal experts have further explained that a Sharia panel functions as a voluntary arbitration body, while courts are established by law with enforcement powers. Sharia panels cannot force participation, unlike courts of law. Perspectives and Reactions Both Muslim and non-Muslim voices remain divided. Ponder again some of the things listed in our opening scripture that the Lord said we can do in His Name: Cast out devils, take up serpents, unharmed by deadly poison, lay hands on the sick for them to recover. This is absolutely transcendent. It lets you know the power in the Name of Jesus. His Name is an instrument of terror against devils, sickness, disease and infirmities. Peter understood this; that’s why in Acts 3, when he and John encountered a man who had been lame from birth, he used the Name of Jesus to effect a cure in the man’s impotent feet. When the man reached out for alms, Peter said, _*”…Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk”*_ (Acts 3:6).
