Nigeria Arrests 105 in Major Crackdown on Hotel Review Fraud Scheme

Nigerian authorities arrest 105 suspects, including four Chinese nationals, in a crackdown on a fake hotel review scam targeting UK residents. Learn how the scheme operated and the EFCC’s efforts to curb cybercrime. Nigerian authorities dismantle a complex internet fraud network targeting UK residents with fake hotel bookings. In a significant breakthrough against internet fraud, Nigerian authorities have uncovered a sophisticated hotel review scam that primarily targeted UK residents. The operation led to the arrest of 105 individuals, including four Chinese nationals and 101 Nigerians, all involved in the elaborate scheme. How the Scam WorkedThe fraudsters lured unsuspecting victims into leaving ratings for hotels, offering small monetary rewards as an incentive. Victims were then encouraged to make bookings at these “rated” hotels, often costing as much as $500. They were promised repayment with substantial interest via cryptocurrency wallets bearing their names. However, these wallets turned out to be inaccessible, leaving victims empty-handed. EFCC’s Major Operation in AbujaThe Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) spearheaded the operation, which uncovered the syndicate’s base at Naka Hall Plaza, located on Abutu Garba Street in Gudu, Abuja. During the raid, 100 compact workstations used to execute the fraudulent activities were recovered. Dele Oyewale, EFCC’s spokesperson, revealed that the suspects employed fake foreign identities to target their victims, with UK residents being their primary focus. Foreign Nationals as MastermindsThe fraudulent network was reportedly led by the four Chinese nationals who orchestrated and supervised the scam. They recruited and trained young Nigerians in advanced technical skills to act as customer service representatives. These representatives followed a predesigned script to manipulate and deceive victims online. Connection to Previous ScamsThis crackdown follows another major operation weeks earlier, in which 792 suspects, including 148 Chinese nationals, were apprehended for involvement in cryptocurrency and romance scams. The EFCC disclosed that foreign nationals often use corporate apartments masquerading as business centers to train Nigerian accomplices in executing these scams. Growing Trend of Cybercrime TrainingAuthorities have raised concerns over the increasing number of foreign nationals teaching Nigerians internet-related crimes. This alarming trend underscores the need for greater international cooperation to combat cybercrime effectively. ConclusionThe EFCC’s crackdown on this fake hotel review scam highlights the agency’s commitment to curbing cybercrime and protecting unsuspecting victims from falling prey to these schemes. However, the rise of foreign-led fraud networks calls for heightened vigilance and collaboration between local and international authorities. Barça President Laporta Addresses Dani Olmo’s Registration Issues Amid Controversy

FC Barcelona President Joan Laporta addresses the Dani Olmo registration saga, highlighting financial hurdles, legal battles, and the club’s resilience in overcoming challenges. FC Barcelona President Joan Laporta recently shared his perspective on the ongoing legal battle to register midfielder Dani Olmo and forward Pau Victor. Speaking during a press conference at the Ciudad Deportiva Joan Gamper on January 14, 2025, Laporta expressed strong sentiments about the challenges facing the club. Barcelona’s struggle stems from failing to meet La Liga’s budgetary requirements to register both players by the end of 2024. As a result, Olmo and Victor remain ineligible to play for the rest of the season unless the issue is resolved. Laporta’s Fiery Response Addressing the press, Laporta defended his administration while accusing certain entities of attempting to undermine FC Barcelona. “None of this is surprising,” Laporta said. “Throughout Barça’s history, whenever we rise, certain forces unite to spin false narratives. Their aim was to destroy us, but our board and staff’s resilience prevented that.” This statement comes after both Olmo and Victor were sidelined for two matches due to La Liga and the Spanish football federation’s (RFEF) refusal to grant them licenses. The rejection was attributed to Barcelona missing the registration deadline. Efforts to Resolve the Crisis Barcelona took urgent steps to comply with La Liga’s strict financial fair play regulations. They sold VIP box seats at the under-construction Spotify Camp Nou to Middle Eastern investors to generate the required funds. However, Laporta revealed that La Liga unexpectedly requested additional documentation regarding these sales on December 31. The delay caused the club to miss the deadline, as the payment from investors in Qatar and the UAE had not been received by year-end. The club also sought assistance from Spain’s national sports council, which granted temporary measures allowing the players to feature in matches. This enabled Olmo to make a substitute appearance during Barcelona’s emphatic 5-2 victory over Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup final in Saudi Arabia—a significant achievement under coach Hansi Flick. A “Clear Attack” on Barcelona Laporta dismissed rumors of his resignation, labeling the registration saga as an orchestrated attempt to destabilize the club. “This was a deliberate move to unsettle us before the Super Cup—a trophy we were determined to win,” Laporta declared. “This is not about supporting Laporta but supporting Barça. Despite the distractions, our players and staff showed incredible mental strength.” Financial Decisions Behind the Scenes Laporta also explained the club’s decision to delay registering the players due to ongoing negotiations with Nike for a new sponsorship deal. “While we had the option to settle for a less favorable Nike deal in the summer, we chose to negotiate further, securing a better contract worth €1.7 billion until 2028,” Laporta shared. “This decision brought in an additional €300 million compared to the initial offer.” Looking Ahead While the registration issue is yet to be fully resolved, Laporta remains optimistic about the future of the club. He emphasized the importance of unity among fans and stakeholders as Barcelona continues to navigate financial and legal hurdles. With the Spanish Super Cup already in their trophy cabinet, Barça’s focus now shifts to addressing the lingering registration issues and maintaining their momentum on the pitch. Overview of the Tribunal’s Decision An Arbitration Tribunal in Lagos State has delivered a verdict mandating SANEF Creatives Ltd, a subsidiary of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) Bankers’ Committee, to compensate Hanson Dredging and Marine Service Ltd (HDMS) with ₦19.4 billion. The case stemmed from the unlawful termination of a contract involving dredging and reclamation work at the Lagos Creative Entertainment Centre (LCEC), commonly known as the National Theatre. The Sole Arbitrator, Engineer Ayo Fanimokun, made this ruling on December 30, 2024, resolving a contractual dispute between HDMS and SANEF Creatives, a special-purpose vehicle created by the Bankers’ Committee. Background to the Dispute The conflict began in May 2022 when SANEF Creatives abruptly terminated a contract signed with HDMS on November 11, 2021. HDMS had already completed over 60% of the dredging and reclamation project before the termination. HDMS argued that project delays were caused by unforeseen risks, including the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and economic challenges. The company requested a contract review, but SANEF rejected the request and instead terminated the agreement, citing the 36-week project timeline as the reason. To complicate matters, SANEF, with interference from the CBN, debited ₦4.2 billion already paid to HDMS. In response, HDMS took legal action, seeking relief for what they termed an unlawful contract termination. HDMS’s Claims and Tribunal Findings HDMS, represented by Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Dr. Charles Mekwunye, sought 13 reliefs, including: In defense, SANEF, represented by Paul Usoro (SAN), argued that the contract’s termination was lawful and filed a ₦70 billion counterclaim, alleging losses due to HDMS’s refusal to remove equipment from the project site. 2025 National Budget: Nigeria Needs a $280 Billion Budget for Its Population of 200 Million — TUC President

Discover the TUC President’s insights on Nigeria’s 2025 budget, economic challenges, and the urgent need for a $280 billion budget to drive sustainable development. Comrade Festus Osifo, the President of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) and National President of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), shares insights on Nigeria’s economic challenges and offers potential solutions in this comprehensive interview with Christian Appolos. Key Achievements of the Labour Movement in 2024 Reflecting on 2024, Comrade Osifo highlights several milestones achieved by the labour movement, with the increase in the national minimum wage standing out. The wage was raised from ₦30,000 to ₦70,000—a 133% increment. While this falls short of labour’s expectations, it was a commendable achievement given the prevailing economic difficulties, including inflation, naira devaluation, and the removal of fuel subsidies, which have eroded the purchasing power of workers. Additionally, the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and its affiliates negotiated numerous collective agreements behind closed doors. In the oil and gas sector, for example, some branches secured remuneration increases of up to 200% without resorting to industrial actions. These successes, though largely unpublicized, underscore the labour movement’s effectiveness in 2024. Ensuring Compliance with the ₦70,000 Minimum Wage Labour has made significant strides in ensuring compliance with the new minimum wage. Within six months of its implementation, several states have already signed agreements and begun payment. For states lagging, high-level discussions are ongoing, and in 2025, TUC aims to hold all states accountable. Where necessary, directives will be issued to members to enforce compliance. Functional Refineries: Will Fuel Prices Drop? The TUC has long advocated for the revitalization of Nigeria’s refineries, such as those in Port Harcourt and Warri. However, Osifo explains that fuel prices are largely determined by the exchange rate. For instance, even as Dangote Refinery commenced production, fuel prices remain tied to the fluctuating cost of crude oil and the exchange rate. If the naira strengthens, fuel prices could drop significantly. For example, a ₦1000/USD exchange rate could reduce fuel prices to approximately ₦400-₦600 per litre. The National Budget and Borrowing Concerns The 2025 budget is set at ₦49.76 trillion, approximately $82 billion based on a projected exchange rate of ₦1500/USD. While this represents a nominal increase from 2024’s budget of ₦27.5 trillion ($38 billion at ₦700/USD), the devaluation of the naira means the real value has diminished. Comrade Osifo points out that Nigeria’s budget is disproportionately low for a country of over 200 million people. South Africa, with a smaller population, has a budget of approximately $128 billion. He argues that Nigeria’s budget should be at least $250 billion to address critical sectors like education, healthcare, and defense. The heavy reliance on borrowing to finance the budget is another concern. With ₦13 trillion earmarked for borrowing and ₦15 trillion allocated to debt servicing, the nation’s finances are increasingly strained. Osifo emphasizes the need to boost revenue generation to reduce the growing deficit and avoid a cycle of unsustainable debt. Expanding Revenue Sources Osifo stresses that Nigeria’s vast natural resources remain underutilized. From bitumen deposits in Ondo to gold in Zamfara, the country has untapped wealth that could significantly boost revenue. He calls for partnerships between the government and private sector to harness these resources. Furthermore, the gas sector presents enormous potential. Nigeria has some of the world’s largest gas reserves, yet projects like the Brass LNG remain stalled. Expanding the gas industry could replicate the success of the NLNG in Bonny and generate substantial revenue. Regarding taxation, Osifo advocates for broadening the tax net rather than increasing rates. With only 5% of Nigerians paying taxes and VAT collection efficiency below 10%, improving tax administration could yield significant returns. Turning Nigeria’s Economy Around in 2025 Osifo identifies the exchange rate as a critical factor in alleviating Nigeria’s economic woes. He suggests that the government implement policies to strengthen the naira, aiming for an exchange rate of ₦1000-₦1200/USD. This would directly lower the cost of goods and services, easing the burden on citizens. Additionally, the government must prioritize food security through massive investments in agriculture. Collaborative efforts between federal, state, and local governments are essential to encourage farming and ensure nationwide food production. Ensuring security across the country is also critical to achieving these goals. Conclusion Comrade Osifo’s insights underscore the urgent need for Nigeria to adopt bold and innovative measures to address its economic challenges. By increasing revenue, strengthening the naira, and making strategic investments in critical sectors, the nation can chart a path toward sustainable development and improved living standards for its citizens. Destiny on a Bus: The Inspiring Journey of Segun Akano from Nigeria to Ireland

Discover the inspiring story of Segun Akano, a Nigerian musician in Ireland, whose journey of resilience and cultural integration bridges two worlds through music and community. From Lagos to Dublin: A Journey of Resilience and Hope At just 17 years old, Segun Akano embarked on a life-changing journey from Nigeria to Ireland, carrying nothing but dreams and determination. With no prior knowledge of the country or its people, Segun’s story is a testament to resilience, cultural integration, and the power of music. Starting Afresh in an Unknown Land Segun’s transition to Ireland was not an easy one. Initially, he arrived in London but soon moved to Ireland through a series of chance encounters. Alone and terrified, Segun’s singular focus was on education. “I just wanted to go to school,” he recalls. He sought asylum and lived for over three years at the Old Schoolhouse hostel in Dún Laoghaire. During this time, he completed his Leaving Certificate at St Laurence College, Loughlinstown, and pursued engineering studies at IT Tallaght. To support himself, he worked night shifts at a petrol station while trekking to Naas every Sunday to play music for Pentecostal church services. Challenges and the Role of Community Life as an asylum seeker came with its share of challenges. Segun faced societal and systemic hurdles but found solace and support in communities around him. Organizations like the Dún Laoghaire Refugee Project, led by Mary King and Rita Canavan, and individuals like David Hicks, Ed and Doriel Molloy, played pivotal roles in his life. Segun also immersed himself in theater and music, performing with Bisi Adigun of Arambe Productions. These creative outlets not only kept him engaged but also helped him contribute meaningfully to Irish society. In 2008, his asylum application was denied, but he received leave to remain on humanitarian grounds. He later became an Irish citizen in 2013. Music: A Bridge Between Cultures Despite his technical background, music remained central to Segun’s life. He is a multi-instrumentalist, playing percussion instruments like bongos, djembe, and talking drum, as well as keyboards and bass guitar. Segun is the musical director of the Yankari Afrobeat Collective, a 13-member band blending Afrobeat, jazz, and electronic music. The group will perform at the Button Factory as part of TradFest on January 24th. For Segun, music is more than entertainment—it’s a primal connection that unites people. “Drumming is the first thing that connects us as humans. It’s primal, a rhythm that transcends culture,” he shares. The Journey Comes Full Circle Reflecting on his life, Segun attributes much of his success to Ireland’s generosity and the kindness of its people. However, he acknowledges that challenges remain for migrants, including instances of prejudice. “We are all migrants,” he says, emphasizing the need for understanding and compassion. Today, Segun is not just a musician but also an entrepreneur. He co-founded Orogun Media, a company supporting artists in monetizing their content. This dual identity as a musician and engineer reflects his belief in merging creativity with technical expertise. A Message of Hope and Gratitude Now married to an Irish set designer, with three children aged 8 to 13, Segun ensures his kids stay connected to their Nigerian heritage through music. While Ireland is now home, his ties to Nigeria remain strong. “Here established me. This is who I am today,” he says. Segun’s journey from Lagos to Dublin is a powerful reminder of the human spirit’s ability to adapt, thrive, and build bridges across cultures. As he continues to inspire through his music and life story, Segun Akano embodies the essence of resilience, creativity, and hope.
