How to Save Money While Paying Off Debt: A Practical Guide

Paying off debt and saving money might sound like contradictory goals, but they don’t have to be. With the right strategies, you can make progress on your financial goals without feeling like you’re sacrificing everything. In this blog post, I’ll show you how to balance these priorities so you can reduce debt while building a safety net. Let’s dive in! Why Save While Paying Off Debt? It’s easy to think you should focus 100% on paying off debt before saving a penny. But life doesn’t stop just because you’re on a debt-free journey. Emergencies happen—cars break down, medical bills come up, or that unexpected home repair hits your budget. Without a savings cushion, you might end up relying on credit cards, which can send you back into the debt spiral. A small emergency fund (think $500–$1,000 to start) can give you the peace of mind to stay on track with your debt repayment plan. 5 Tips to Save Money While Paying Off Debt 1. Create a Budget That Works for You A budget is your roadmap to success. Start by tracking your income and expenses to see where your money is going. Use tools like apps, spreadsheets, or even a good old notebook to organize your spending. ? Pro Tip: Use the 50/30/20 rule as a guide—50% for needs, 30% for wants, and 20% for debt repayment and savings. If your debt feels overwhelming, shift part of the “wants” category toward your financial goals. 2. Automate Your Savings Even while paying off debt, set up an automatic transfer to your savings account. It doesn’t have to be a lot—$10 or $20 a week can add up over time. Automating makes saving effortless and removes the temptation to skip it. Think of it this way: You’re paying yourself first, even while tackling debt. 3. Negotiate Bills and Expenses Many of your monthly expenses aren’t set in stone. Call service providers to ask for discounts, switch to lower-cost plans, or cancel services you no longer need. Here’s where you can start: Bonus Tip: Use apps that track and negotiate your bills for you, like Truebill or Billshark. 4. Cut Costs Without Feeling Deprived Small lifestyle tweaks can lead to big savings. Here are a few ideas: Saving doesn’t have to feel like a punishment. Focus on things that matter to you and cut back where it doesn’t. 5. Choose a Debt Repayment Strategy That Fits There are two popular debt repayment methods: Pick a method that motivates you and stick with it. You’ll feel empowered as you see progress. Bonus Tip: Use Windfalls Wisely Got a tax refund, bonus, or unexpected cash? Resist the urge to splurge. Instead, divide it between savings and debt repayment. For example, use 70% to pay down debt and stash 30% in your savings. What About Investing? If your employer offers a 401(k) match, take advantage of it—it’s essentially free money. Otherwise, focus on building savings and paying off high-interest debt before diving into investments. Stay Motivated on Your Journey Balancing saving and debt repayment takes discipline, but don’t forget to celebrate small wins along the way. Paid off a credit card? Treat yourself to a small reward (within reason!). Built your first $500 emergency fund? Pat yourself on the back—you’re making progress. Conclusion: You’ve Got This! Saving money while paying off debt is all about finding balance and being intentional with your finances. Start small, stay consistent, and remember—it’s not about perfection; it’s about progress. With these tips, you’ll be well on your way to financial freedom and peace of mind. Rhapsody of Realities January 20th 2025, HIS VICTORY OVER SATAN IN HELL

Pastor Chris Oyakhilome DSc DSc DD And the hostile princes and rulers He shook off from Himself, and boldly displayed them as His conquests, when by the Cross He triumphed over them (Colossians 2:15 WNT) Christ’s victory on the Cross and in Hell wasn’t for Himself; it was for us. When He was crucified on the Cross, He took our place on that Cross. That means when He was crucified, you were crucified. When He died, you died. When they took His body off of the Cross and buried Him in the grave, you were buried in the grave. Then the Bible says He went to hell; He was taken to hell because every sinner who died was taken to hell. So when Jesus died, He went to hell as a prisoner because He had taken our place of sin. The Bible says He was made sin, who knew no sin: For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him”*_ (2 Corinthians 5:21). Therefore, on account of our sins, Jesus went to hell and consummated His victory over sin, Satan and the demons of darkness in helI. He defeated them in their domain. Recall what the Bible says in Ephesians 4:9, Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?”*_ It wasn’t possible for anyone who went to hell to come out of hell; but not Jesus. In hell, Satan and all the demons of darkness converged on Jesus; they grappled with Him, and it was in hell that Jesus defeated Satan. Everyone in hell had to submit and bow to Satan, but Satan couldn’t get Jesus to bow. The Bible pictures how the demons mounted on Jesus and tried to force Him to bow to Satan. But Jesus threw off from Himself powers; He threw off principalities; He disarmed the powers and authorities of darkness and made a public spectacle of them. He triumphed over them in that great combat in hell. _*”And the hostile princes and rulers He shook off from Himself, and boldly displayed them as His conquests, when by the Cross He triumphed over them”*_ (Colossians 2:15 WNT). All the demons of darkness saw Jesus defeat Satan and collect the keys of hell and death from him. We’ll learn more in our next study. Hallelujah! *PRAYER* *Dear Father, I thank you for the victory that Christ wrought for me over Satan and the forces of darkness. His triumph over sin, death and hell is my triumph. I walk in the light of this victory, ruling over circumstances, principalities and powers of darkness. I live in the dominion and righteousness of Christ. I’m more than a conqueror. Hallelujah!* *FURTHER STUDY* 1 Corinthians 15:54-57* So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. 55 O death, where [is] thy sting? O grave, where [is] thy victory? 56 The sting of death [is] sin; and the strength of sin [is] the law. 57 But thanks [be] to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Hebrews 2:14-15* Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; 15 And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. Everywhere I go, the Lord has the right people at the right place and at the right time to favour my course. The ability of God is at work in me today, and I’m conscious of it! The Nation Awaits a Ceasefire: A Call for Justice and Reconciliation

Explore the call for reconciliation in Nigeria as survivors of the civil war, including Archbishop Emmanuel Chukwuma, reflect on the horrors of the Asaba genocide. Learn why January 15 should be a day of forgiveness and healing. President Tinubu’s Plea for Debt Forgiveness During the recently concluded United Nations General Assembly (September 10–24, 2024), President Bola Ahmed Tinubu passionately advocated for debt forgiveness for Nigeria. This plea comes at a critical time, as the nation grapples with challenges rooted in decades of economic mismanagement and systemic issues. The President’s call reminds us of the urgency to address these burdens before they deepen the nation’s struggles. Debt forgiveness could pave the way for rebuilding and justice, but achieving this goal will require honesty and transparency, especially regarding past controversies tied to financial mismanagement. The time has come to not only seek relief but also to restore integrity to Nigeria’s narrative. The Gravity of a Ceasefire A ceasefire represents more than an end to violence; it symbolizes a commitment to justice, reconciliation, and genuine healing. In light of past conflicts, particularly the civil war, it is crucial for leaders to prioritize national unity and ensure that the wounds of the past are not ignored. Emeritus Archbishop Most Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Chukwuma, who recently retired from priesthood, reflected on his experiences during the civil war and the profound need for national reconciliation. His insights highlight the importance of recognizing and addressing historical injustices, especially those borne by marginalized groups. Reflections on the Asaba Genocide The horrors of the Asaba genocide during the Nigerian Civil War remain a dark chapter in the nation’s history. As a survivor of the tragedy, Archbishop Chukwuma recounted the events that unfolded when Nigerian soldiers targeted innocent civilians in Asaba. Separated by gender, men and boys were lined up and executed under accusations of being Biafran sympathizers. The Archbishop, then a teenager, narrowly escaped by feigning death as corpses fell on him. He recalls: “I saw war with my eyes, I saw blood with my eyes. Innocent people were killed for nothing except being labeled ‘Ojukwu’s brothers.’ It was a serious genocide.” The Archbishop also lamented the long-lasting effects of the war, including the destruction of homes, forced marriages, and the marginalization of the Igbo people. A Call for National Apology and Recognition Archbishop Chukwuma has consistently advocated for Nigeria to apologize to the people of Asaba and the eastern region for the atrocities committed during the civil war. He proposed January 15, his birthday, to be recognized as a national day of mourning, forgiveness, and thanksgiving for the war’s end. Drawing parallels with the Biblical story of Noah, he emphasized the importance of acknowledging past sins and seeking divine forgiveness to foster healing and unity. He further urged President Tinubu to honor the people of Asaba and the eastern region, much like the posthumous recognition given to MKO Abiola. “If the war has ended, we should thank God for it and make amends. Instead, the Igbo people are still sidelined and neglected. This is unfortunate.” The Path Forward: Justice, Healing, and Reconciliation To move forward as a united nation, Nigeria must confront its past with honesty. Recognizing the sacrifices and suffering of those affected by the civil war is a crucial step. Commemorating the victims of the Asaba genocide and other tragedies with a national day of reflection could foster reconciliation and pave the way for justice. President Tinubu’s administration has the opportunity to lead this charge, ensuring that no part of the nation feels excluded or forgotten. Only through collective acknowledgment and sincere efforts can Nigeria achieve the peace and unity it so desperately seeks. Conclusion The nation’s plea for a ceasefire is not just about silencing guns but about mending broken relationships and restoring trust. By embracing justice and reconciliation, Nigeria can lay the groundwork for a more unified and prosperous future. Let us remember the past, not with bitterness, but with the resolve to build a better tomorrow. Nigerians in Diaspora Call on Interior Minister to Resolve Passport Printer Crisis

Urgent Appeal from Nigerians in the U.S. Nigerians residing in the United States, represented by the Organization for the Advancement of Nigerians (OAN), have called on the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, to address the persistent passport printer crisis at the Nigerian Consulates in New York and Atlanta. The group expressed deep disappointment that despite raising concerns about the issue over a year ago, no official response or action has been taken to alleviate the challenges. Inefficiencies in Passport Processing In a statement signed by Olutomi Aregbesola, President of OAN, the organization highlighted that the absence of passport printers at the New York and Atlanta Consulates has created significant hardships for Nigerians. Many have been left stranded without valid passports, making it nearly impossible for them to travel for emergencies, work, or family obligations. The statement further noted that two passport printers are currently located at the Nigerian Embassy in Washington, D.C., with one of them reportedly sitting idle. Unnecessary Delays and Hardships The refusal to relocate the idle printer to New York or Atlanta has been attributed to “unfounded concerns” raised by the previous Minister of Interior, who feared such a decision might lead to friction among missions. “This reasoning is illogical and demonstrates a lack of strategic decision-making,” OAN said. They emphasized that this inaction has caused: The New York Consulate’s High Demand OAN highlighted that the New York Consulate serves the largest jurisdiction in the United States, with a dense population of Nigerians relying on its services. Despite this, it lacks a functional passport printer, a situation the organization described as “unacceptable in 2025.” The group urged the Minister of Interior to take decisive steps to resolve this crisis, ensuring efficient and timely passport processing for Nigerians in the U.S. READ ALSO: Follow the LMSINT MEDIA channel on WhatsApp: Join Our WhatsApp Group Hear: Chat on WhatsApp Join our Telegram Chanel.

Battle for Survival: The Rise of Child Scavengers in Nigeria

Explore the heartbreaking rise of child scavengers in Nigeria, a crisis fueled by poverty and economic challenges. Learn about their stories and the urgent call for government intervention. A Growing Crisis Among Nigerian Children In today’s Nigeria, while a few children still enjoy the comfort of a warm home and daily meals, the harsh economic realities have forced the majority to seek sustenance in unconventional and heartbreaking ways—scavenging through refuse dumps for survival. This troubling trend highlights the dire state of poverty affecting families nationwide. The Harsh Reality of Child Scavengers From the beginning of the year, children as young as nine and up to 14 years old can be seen carrying sacks filled with discarded items such as used cartons, empty cans, plastic bottles, and bowls. These scavenged materials are sold for meager sums, helping the children contribute to their families’ survival or save for basic needs. Jacob’s Story: A 10-Year-Old Breadwinner Jacob Olorunfemi, a 10-year-old boy, is a testament to the struggles many Nigerian children face. Jacob shared his story of being pulled out of lessons due to his parents’ financial struggles after the festive season: “I don’t go to lessons anymore because my parents said there is no money after Christmas. I used to attend lessons that cost N500 per week.” His parents work tirelessly—his mother as a cleaner and laundry worker, and his father at a bus park. Yet, their income barely covers basic necessities. Influenced by a friend, Jacob joined the scavenging routine and has since saved N2,000, a significant achievement for him. Yekini’s Struggle: A Life Without Parental Support For 11-year-old Yekini Salam, the challenges are even more daunting. Orphaned at a young age, he lives with his stepmother, who has three other children. Yekini dropped out of school years ago and now scavenges for plastics, cans, and bottles to survive. “I want to save enough money to learn aluminium window and door-frame construction skills,” he says with determination. Voices of Concern The heartbreaking stories of children like Jacob and Yekini have drawn attention from human rights activists and concerned citizens. Human Rights Activist’s Take Mr. Amos Magbagbeola, a human rights activist, described the situation as alarming: “This is a very painful and worrisome situation. Children labour day and night just to feed. The current economic condition has degraded parents to struggle endlessly, leaving children to fend for themselves. The government must act swiftly to address this menace.” A Civil Servant’s Perspective Mrs. Juliana Obuh, a civil servant, expressed similar concerns: “Everywhere you look, underage children are begging, scavenging, and performing menial jobs. These children are vulnerable to exploitation and may easily become tools for fraud and crime. The government must step in urgently—these children are the nation’s future.” A Call for Action The increasing number of child scavengers reflects deeper issues of poverty, unemployment, and inadequate access to education. Public schools, once a beacon of hope for many families, now require fees for textbooks, writing materials, and other essentials, further alienating children from their right to education. Key Recommendations: Conclusion The plight of child scavengers in Nigeria serves as a stark reminder of the socioeconomic challenges faced by the country. These children, often referred to as the future of the nation, deserve better opportunities and a chance to thrive. It is up to the government, communities, and all stakeholders to ensure these young lives are not wasted but nurtured for a brighter tomorrow. Rising Threats from Internet Fraudsters In its statement, the EFCC highlighted the increasing danger posed by internet fraudsters, commonly known as “Yahoo boys.” These individuals are now involved in activities far beyond cybercrime. “Intelligence has shown that these criminals are carrying arms, involved in kidnapping, banditry, ritual killings, and other deadly acts. The public should not fold its arms or allow itself to be deceived into thinking they are merely ‘Yahoo boys and girls,’” the EFCC stated. The agency vowed to ensure justice for the slain officer, declaring that it would not tolerate further attacks on its personnel. Details of the Awka Operation The EFCC detailed the events leading to the tragic incident in Awka, Anambra State. On January 17, operatives conducted a raid at Dr. J.O. Commitment to Justice The EFCC reiterated its determination to combat internet fraud and other corrupt practices across Nigeria. The agency expressed gratitude to its sister agencies and the general public for their support and condolences following the tragic loss. Why Dangote Refinery Increased Petrol Prices: An In-Depth Look

Discover why Dangote Refinery recently increased petrol prices. Learn about the factors influencing the adjustment, including global crude oil prices, and the measures taken to ensure affordability. Dangote Refinery Explains Petrol Price Adjustment The Dangote Petrochemical Refinery has clarified the reasons behind its recent hike in the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly referred to as petrol. This adjustment, which raised the ex-depot price from ₦899 to ₦955 per litre, is linked to the rising cost of global crude oil. In a statement released on its official X account on Sunday, January 19, 2025, the refinery detailed the factors contributing to the price increase while emphasizing its commitment to ensuring affordability for Nigerians. Factors Behind the Price Increase The statement highlighted that the adjustment was necessitated by a 15% rise in global crude oil prices, from $70 to $82 per barrel. As crude oil remains the primary input for producing PMS, fluctuations in its international price directly affect production costs. Additionally, the premium for Nigerian crude, which is approximately $3 per barrel, has further influenced the pricing. Despite these challenges, Dangote Refinery increased its ex-depot price by only 5%, reflecting a commitment to minimizing the impact on consumers. Retail Pricing and National Distribution To ensure consistent pricing nationwide, including in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Dangote Refinery’s partners—Ardova, Heyden, and MRS Holdings—will retail petrol at ₦970 per litre. The refinery has also absorbed increased logistics costs to make this possible. “If the entire increase in crude oil prices were passed on to the market, PMS would retail at approximately ₦1,150 to ₦1,200 per litre in some locations,” the statement revealed. However, the current price of ₦970 per litre reflects the refinery’s effort to shield consumers from the full brunt of global price volatility. Commitment to Nigerians Dangote Refinery reiterated its dedication to providing affordable and high-quality petrol while contributing to Nigeria’s economic self-sufficiency. The refinery has absorbed approximately 50% of the cost increases in the international oil market to protect Nigerians from undue hardship. The statement concluded: “In these challenging times, we continue to prioritize the best interests of Nigerians, striving to shield consumers from the full impact of global price volatility while adapting to evolving market conditions.” Conclusion The recent petrol price adjustment by Dangote Refinery underscores the impact of global crude oil price fluctuations on local markets. However, the refinery remains committed to ensuring affordability and reliability, absorbing significant costs to minimize the burden on Nigerians.
