EU Considers Retaliatory Measures Against New US Tariffs

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has condemned the recent trade tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump, calling them a significant setback for the global economy. The European Union (EU) has signaled its readiness to implement countermeasures should negotiations with Washington fail. Speaking in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, ahead of an EU-Central Asia partnership summit, von der Leyen reaffirmed the bloc’s commitment to protecting its economic interests. EU’s Response to US Tariffs “We are in the final stages of preparing an initial package of countermeasures against tariffs on steel,” she stated. “Additionally, we are formulating further responses to safeguard our businesses should discussions with the US administration collapse.” While she did not provide specifics on the next phase of EU actions, sources indicate that the EU is preparing retaliatory tariffs worth up to €26 billion ($28.4 billion) on US goods. These measures are set to counterbalance the US tariffs on steel and aluminum, which took effect on March 12. Escalation of Global Trade Tensions On Wednesday, Trump announced a 10% universal tariff on most imports to the US, with an elevated 20% rate specifically targeting EU products. This aggressive trade policy has intensified global trade tensions, raising fears of inflation and economic stagnation both in the US and worldwide. Von der Leyen expressed deep concern over the economic repercussions, particularly for vulnerable economies subjected to the highest tariff rates. She warned that heightened protectionism could lead to economic instability, exacerbating global trade challenges. “Uncertainty will increase, triggering a wave of protectionist policies worldwide. Worse still, there appears to be no coherent strategy in this unfolding disorder, as all US trading partners bear the brunt of these abrupt policy shifts,” she emphasized. A Call for Trade Reform Despite the tensions, von der Leyen acknowledged the need for trade reforms, agreeing with Trump’s assertion that certain countries have exploited global trade regulations. She stated that the EU remains open to discussions aimed at revising trade frameworks to ensure fairness for all parties involved. Trump Ends Duty-Free Privileges for Low-Value Imports from China

In a decisive move to tighten trade regulations, former U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order effectively closing the “de minimis” loophole, which previously allowed low-value shipments from China and Hong Kong to enter the U.S. without duties. The order, which takes effect on May 2 at 12:01 a.m. Eastern Time, was announced during a White House Rose Garden event where Trump also introduced sweeping new tariffs on international trade partners. According to the White House, the change comes after Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick confirmed the readiness of tariff collection systems to enforce duties on these shipments. The new regulations mandate that goods imported from China and Hong Kong, valued at or below $800, will now be subject to all applicable tariffs. Additionally, shipments routed through the postal network will incur a duty rate of either 30% of their value or a fixed charge of $25 per item. This rate is set to increase to $50 per item starting June 1. This executive order follows a previous attempt on February 1 to end the duty-free policy, which was temporarily paused due to logistical challenges in inspecting the influx of millions of small packages. Reports indicate that nearly 1.4 billion packages entered the U.S. through the duty-free route last year, highlighting the significant volume of such shipments. Trump had long vowed to curb China’s influence in trade, citing concerns over the synthetic opioid crisis, which has contributed to over 450,000 American fatalities in the past decade. The temporary halt on the de minimis rule enforcement earlier in February led to massive cargo accumulation at entry ports, prompting further regulatory adjustments. To comply with the new directive, carriers handling postal shipments from China and Hong Kong are now required to disclose shipping details to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), secure an international carrier bond to ensure tariff payment, and adhere to a structured payment schedule for duties. CBN Debunks Reports on N5,000 and N10,000 Banknotes

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has officially dismissed claims regarding the introduction of new N5,000 and N10,000 banknotes, labeling such reports as false and misleading. False Reports on High-Denomination Banknotes Recent widespread speculations suggested that the apex bank was preparing to roll out high-value currency denominations to streamline cash transactions and enhance liquidity management in Nigeria’s financial system. According to these reports, the introduction of the N5,000 and N10,000 notes was purportedly linked to a supposed Deputy Governor, Dr. Ibrahim Tahir Jr., with claims that the new currency would be in circulation from May 1, 2025. CBN’s Official Statement Refuting these claims, the CBN took to its official X (formerly Twitter) page, stating: “This content is NOT from the Central Bank of Nigeria. Kindly note that the official website of the CBN is cbn.gov.ng.” This clarification aligns with the CBN’s continuous efforts to combat misinformation and ensure the public relies only on verified sources for banking policies and financial updates. China Demands Immediate Removal of US Tariffs, Threatens Retaliation

China has strongly urged the United States to immediately revoke its latest tariff measures while vowing retaliatory actions to protect its economic interests. This statement follows sweeping trade levies imposed by former US President Donald Trump on global trading partners. China’s Response to the US Tariff Hike In an official statement, China’s Ministry of Commerce criticized the US for disregarding trade agreements established through years of negotiations. It also highlighted that the US economy has significantly benefited from global trade. “China firmly opposes these measures and will implement countermeasures to defend its legitimate interests,” the ministry stated. Breakdown of the US Tariff Increase On Wednesday, Trump announced an additional 34% tariff on Chinese imports, adding to the 20% duty imposed earlier in the year. This brings the total tariff rate to 54%, approaching the 60% threshold he had previously suggested during his presidential campaign. As a result, exporters from China and other global economies will now face a minimum 10% tariff, contributing to the newly introduced 34% levy. This change will take effect from Saturday, with higher reciprocal tariffs set to roll out by April 9. De Minimis Loophole Closed In addition to the tariff hike, Trump signed an executive order eliminating the “de minimis” rule. This exemption had allowed low-value shipments from China and Hong Kong to enter the US duty-free. The closure of this loophole is expected to impact cross-border e-commerce significantly. Economic Implications and Global Trade Impact The new tariffs could further escalate tensions between the two largest economies, potentially disrupting global supply chains and international trade relations. Analysts suggest that businesses dependent on imports from China may face rising costs, which could lead to increased consumer prices in the US. Edo Governorship Election: PDP’s Asue Ighodalo Rejects Tribunal Verdict, Moves to Appeal Court

The 2024 Edo State governorship election candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Asue Ighodalo, has expressed his intention to challenge the tribunal ruling at the Court of Appeal. The verdict upheld the election of Monday Okpebholo as the legitimate governor of Edo State. Ighodalo’s Response to Tribunal Decision Shortly after the tribunal’s judgment on Wednesday, Ighodalo released an official statement condemning the ruling, describing it as a serious miscarriage of justice. He stated, “I have, therefore, directed my legal team to immediately file an appeal against this decision, which we firmly believe undermines the principles of justice.” Ighodalo emphasized that his challenge goes beyond personal ambition but rather represents a commitment to protecting democracy, ensuring citizens’ right to freely determine their leadership, and preserving a legacy of fairness for future generations. Tribunal’s Verdict and Basis for Rejection The Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, presided over by Justice Wilfred Kpochi and two other panel members, dismissed Ighodalo’s petition due to a lack of substantial evidence. The tribunal ruled that the PDP candidate failed to provide competent witnesses or sufficient proof to validate claims of electoral malpractice and non-compliance with the Electoral Act. Call for Peace and Assurance to Supporters Ighodalo reassured his supporters and members of the PDP to remain law-abiding while they continue seeking legal redress. He reaffirmed his trust in the judiciary, calling it the “last hope of the common man.” He urged Edo citizens to stay peaceful and patient as the legal process unfolds, stating, “This is not the conclusion of our struggle, but rather the beginning of a greater pursuit for justice, democracy, and the rightful mandate given to me and my running mate, Barr. Osarodion Ogie, on the platform of the PDP.” Commitment to Edo State’s Progress Acknowledging the overwhelming support received throughout his campaign, Ighodalo reiterated that his mission is not driven by personal ambition but by a collective vision for a prosperous Edo State. He remains resolute in upholding democratic values, justice, and the will of the people. He further affirmed, “We are unwavering in our pursuit of truth and justice, and we will continue to fight for the people’s mandate with every legal means available.” Related Articles For more details on Nigeria’s electoral laws and tribunal processes, visit the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) website. Kogi SDP Condemns Ban on Political Rallies, Calls It a Threat to Democracy

The Kogi State chapter of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has strongly criticized the recent ban imposed by the state government on political rallies and convoys, describing it as a deliberate attempt to stifle opposition voices and weaken democracy. In a statement released on Tuesday, the State Chairman of SDP, Mr. Ahmed Attah, through the party’s Press Secretary, Isaiah Ijele, condemned the restriction, calling it an attack on fundamental democratic principles. Violation of Constitutional Rights Attah emphasized that restricting political gatherings contradicts the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which guarantees freedom of movement and association. He further urged Governor Ahmed Ododo to take lessons from history and avoid policies that could derail the state’s democratic progress. “The party considers this move as an infringement on citizens’ rights, particularly the freedom of political participation. Kogi is not in a state of war, and there is no justification for suppressing political activities,” Attah stated. A Call for Political Tolerance He also warned against the return to the era of political repression, stressing that opposition parties should be allowed to function without unnecessary restrictions. Instead of limiting democratic engagement, the government should focus on policies that promote development and inclusivity. Attah urged the Kogi State Government to reconsider its decision and place the state’s growth above political interests. He called on civil society organizations, legal experts, and pro-democracy advocates to raise their voices against any action that threatens Nigeria’s democratic structure. The Bigger Picture: Why This Ban Matters The restriction on political rallies raises concerns over transparency, fairness, and freedom in electoral processes. Political analysts argue that such bans often target opposition parties, creating an uneven playing field that undermines democracy. According to a report by Premium Times, restrictions on political rallies have historically led to political instability and increased voter apathy. Ensuring a free and open political atmosphere is essential for fostering public trust in governance. Conclusion The SDP has taken a firm stand against what it sees as an undemocratic move by the Kogi State Government. With elections on the horizon, the party insists that all stakeholders must work towards ensuring a level playing field for all political participants. The coming weeks will determine whether the state government will heed the calls for democratic fairness or continue with policies that limit political freedoms. President Tinubu’s Trip to France: Medical Care or Working Visit? Sowore Raises Allegations

Nigerian activist and politician Omoyele Sowore has raised concerns about President Bola Tinubu’s recent trip to France, alleging that the visit is for medical treatment rather than a working visit as officially stated. Earlier reports from DAILY POST indicated that President Tinubu was scheduled to depart Abuja, Nigeria, on Wednesday for Paris for a working visit. His spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, mentioned that the president is expected to return to Nigeria within two weeks. However, Sowore, in a post on his official Facebook page, claimed that the president’s trip was not for official duties but for medical attention. He stated, “Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has fled Nigeria again to France for medical care, although some individuals in his office are falsely claiming it is a ‘working visit.’” Sowore further expressed his concern, saying, “It is disturbing to think that nearly 200 million Nigerians are being continuously misinformed, and yet they remain passive in seeking the truth.” This raises questions about transparency and the state of leadership in Nigeria. Protest Erupts in Warri as Tricycle Operators Reject Sticker Price Increase

Commercial tricycle operators in Warri, Delta State, have voiced their opposition to the rise in sticker prices imposed by alleged extortionists posing as government officials. The price hike has sparked a protest that paralyzed transportation within the city. During the protest, operators ceased all services, preventing passengers from reaching their destinations. As a result, many commuters had no choice but to walk long distances to their intended locations. The demonstrators carried placards with bold messages, including: “We won’t agree. Touts, pack up and leave,” “Oborevwori, call your people to order. We can’t afford ₦12,000 for a ticket we used to buy for ₦3,000,” and “Touts, stop exploiting us.” They blocked key roads in Warri and surrounding areas, chanting solidarity songs in a show of unity and frustration. Tricycle drivers are calling for Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to intervene and prevent the issue from escalating into a crisis. One protester, Efevogho, shared his frustration with DAILY POST along Okumagba Avenue, explaining that the fee for a ticket, which previously cost ₦3,000, had now surged to ₦12,000. He questioned how they were expected to cover such a cost when their daily earnings on the roads were already meager. Another driver, Eguonoghene, echoed the sentiment, urging Governor Oborevwori to take immediate action to alleviate the hardships they are facing at the hands of extortionists. In response, a group called the Initiative For Social Rights Concerns and Advancement (ISRCA) issued a statement urging the governor to swiftly address the unrest. The group highlighted the operators’ resistance to the sticker price hike, noting that the cost had skyrocketed from ₦3,000 to ₦12,000. Comrade Derrick Oritsematosan Agberen, National Coordinator of ISRCA, emphasized that the rise in transportation costs is a direct consequence of economic difficulties and poor government policies. He argued that, since the discontinuation of the Delta State Urban Mass Transit Scheme under former Governor Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, the current administration should consider taking decisive action to ensure the price of transportation stickers remains affordable for tricycle drivers and residents alike. The ISRCA further urged the government to reduce the sticker prices and, by extension, the cost of transportation for residents who depend on tricycles for their daily commute. Agberen noted that the tricycle industry plays a vital role in providing employment and transportation for the people, particularly in a state where job opportunities are scarce. Call for Government ActionThe group stressed that the state government should work directly with tricycle unions to establish a fair and standardized price for stickers. This would help alleviate the financial strain on drivers while ensuring affordable transportation options for the people.
