An Israeli air assault struck the Al-Baqa Cafeteria, a popular seafront cafe in Gaza City, killing a Hamas fighter while simultaneously taking the lives of dozens of innocent civilians — including artists, students, and children. Before the attack, the cafe was a hub of normal life, bustling with visitors enjoying their tea, scrolling through social media on their phones, or celebrating birthdays with family and friends. According to sources speaking to journalists, a Hamas militant in civilian clothing had quietly arrived and taken a seat in a corner of the cafe moments before the tragedy unfolded. Soon after his arrival, an Israeli aerial strike hit the cafe, blasting through the walls and creating a massive crater while unleashing horrific destruction. Eyewitnesses described horrifying scenes in the aftermath, with survivors desperately searching for missing loved ones amid the chaos. One witness shared with reporters, “The scene was horrific, there were bodies, blood, screaming everywhere.” Another described the damage in raw terms: “It was total destruction. A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, presided over by Justice Binta Fatima Nyako, on Friday invalidated the suspension imposed on Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi State. The court ruled that the suspension was unconstitutional and consequently ordered her immediate reinstatement to the Senate. The ruling arose after Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan had approached the court, contesting the legality of her six-month suspension by the upper chamber. Delivering her judgment, Justice Nyako highlighted that even though the National Assembly retains the legal authority to sanction or discipline its members for misconduct, such punitive actions must not go so far as to strip constituents of their right to fair representation. Justice Nyako emphasized that the six-month suspension violated constitutional safeguards and amounted to an excessive sanction. She pointed out that the disciplinary measure surpassed the 180-day legislative sitting period permitted for a House, thereby effectively silencing the voice of Akpoti-Uduaghan’s constituents for too long. While nullifying the suspension and directing the Senate to restore the senator’s membership without further delay, the court, however, found Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan in contempt of court. As a result, Justice Nyako imposed a fine of five million naira against her. Additionally, the senator was ordered to publicly apologize to the court. According to the judgment, this apology must be published in two widely circulated national newspapers and also shared publicly on Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s Facebook page. By this decision, the Federal High Court has underscored the balance between a legislative body’s power to discipline its members and the constitutional guarantee that citizens must have continuous representation through their elected lawmakers. The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Friday threw down a challenge to David Mark, Interim National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), and opposition coalition stalwart Rotimi Amaechi, accusing them of misleading Nigerians with their rhetoric. Wike, speaking firmly, asserted that the coalition spearheaded by David Mark, Amaechi, and their allies had no realistic path to regaining political power come 2027. Using the event as a platform, Wike directly challenged David Mark, Amaechi, and the coalition’s leadership to present their performance records to Nigerians. Wike stated, “They claimed the coalition was formed 18 months ago, while Tinubu had only been in office for six months. You started forming your coalition while he was just six months into the presidency, yet you’ve been telling Nigerians that they are unhappy after such a short time in power.” He further highlighted the past opportunities these leaders had to make a difference while in public office. Wike pointed out that David Mark held the office of Senate President for eight years, while Amaechi was Speaker of a State Assembly for four years and later served as Minister of Transportation for another eight years. Despite these opportunities, Wike argued, neither leader had made tangible improvements to satisfy Nigerians. “They never made angry Nigerians happy,” Wike emphasized, “but after staying in office for just six months, you begin to complain about how Nigerians are angry.” Wike continued, “I have consistently challenged everyone to show their performance records. As Senate President, show the people of Benue State and Otukpo what you accomplished — was it just about flying in a helicopter to Otukpo? We are here, within just 16 days, showing our own scorecards with results on the ground.” He declared the moment as “Operation Show Your Scorecard,” challenging opposition figures to reveal their impact while in office. An activist, Faith Nwadishi, who serves as the Executive Director of the Centre for Transparency Advocacy (CTA), has called on the Nigerian Senate to uphold the ruling of the Federal High Court mandating the recall of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (PDP-Kogi), who was earlier suspended. According to LMSINT MEDIA, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan had been placed on suspension by the upper legislative chamber on March 6, citing alleged breaches of the Senate Standing Orders 2023 (as amended). Nevertheless, the Abuja division of the Federal High Court, on Friday, issued a directive compelling the Senate to reinstate Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central Senatorial District, from her suspension. Delivering judgment on the matter, Justice Binta Nyako characterized the six-month suspension imposed on Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan by the Senate as “excessive.” Speaking in reaction to the court ruling, Faith Nwadishi remarked that since the pronouncement originated from a court of law, the Senate was obligated to comply with the decision, emphasizing that no one is above the law. Nwadishi stated, “The court essentially functions as an arbiter — that is, an intermediary institution — to resolve disputes. Therefore, I welcome the court’s decision instructing that she be recalled. In my view, this issue ought not to have dragged on for so long. I strongly urge the leadership of the Senate to immediately obey the court’s judgment.” Meanwhile, Justice Nyako, in the same judgment, also imposed a penalty of five million naira (N5,000,000) on Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. The judge explained that the fine stemmed from Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s “satirical apology” which she posted to her Facebook page on April 27, in contravention of an existing, valid court order. Justice Nyako further directed Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan to issue an unreserved apology in two national newspapers as well as on her Facebook page within seven days of the order, in order to purge herself of the contempt committed against the court.

The South-East region has renewed its call for a constitutional amendment that would institutionalize a rotational presidency system and grant full autonomy to local government administrations across Nigeria. This demand was voiced during the South-East Zonal Public Hearing on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, organized on Friday in Enugu by the Senate. During the event, the Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, highlighted the critical importance of adopting rotational presidency principles for the South-East geopolitical zone. Governor Mbah, whose remarks were delivered by the Secretary to the Enugu State Government, Professor Chidiebere Onyia, explained that embracing rotational leadership among Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones would ensure each region — including the South-East — is fairly represented in the highest political office of the country. He noted that this approach would greatly strengthen national unity and foster a profound sense of belonging for all Nigerians. In the same vein, Mbah suggested that gubernatorial positions should rotate among senatorial zones within each state, while legislative seats should rotate among the constituencies. This, he argued, would improve inclusiveness and promote equitable participation across every level of the nation’s democratic framework. Furthermore, the governor advocated strongly for increased representation of women in government. He proposed the creation of one extra Senate seat for women per state and two additional seats in the House of Representatives specifically reserved for women. In addition, the Enugu State governor recommended that each state’s House of Assembly should have three extra seats allocated for women, to advance gender equality and guarantee women a more active role in governance and decision-making processes. Governor Mbah also called for the proper institutionalisation of local government councils as fully independent administrative units. He argued that the current system — in which state governors frequently appoint caretaker committees to administer local governments — limits local democracy and frustrates development at the grassroots level. Mbah emphasized that the constitutional review committee should amend the 1999 Constitution to enforce the democratic structure of local government councils, enabling them to gain direct access to their allocations from the National Consolidated Account. He further demanded legislative and fiscal reforms that would devolve greater power and resources to state governments. According to him, the excessive concentration of political and financial power at the federal level, which stems from Nigeria’s history of military rule, has restricted the growth and advancement of states. Mbah stressed that a functional federal structure must empower states as autonomous bodies with adequate authority and resources to positively affect their citizens’ welfare. Similarly, Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State presented complementary demands. Through a speech delivered by Moses Odunwa, the Speaker of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Nwifuru supported the need to reserve designated political seats for women. He also pressed for the creation of an additional state within the South-East geopolitical zone, explaining that it would bring the region into balance with other geopolitical regions across Nigeria in terms of state count and representation. According to Nwifuru’s representative, if certain seats were set aside exclusively for female candidates, every political party would be compelled to nominate women to contest and fill those seats, thereby expanding female participation in governance. The South-East Zonal Public Hearing on constitutional review brought together traditional rulers, representatives of non-governmental organizations, civil society groups, and other government stakeholders to deliberate on how best to restructure Nigeria’s constitutional framework to achieve fairness, inclusivity, and sustainable national development.

Pastor Chris Oyakhilome DSc DSc DD And whereas they commanded to leave the stump of the tree roots; thy kingdom shall be sure unto thee, after that thou shalt have known that the heavens do rule (Daniel 4:26). The Bible, in Daniel 4, tells of how Nebuchadnezzar had a dream that troubled him deeply. In this dream, he saw a magnificent tree that grew tall and strong, providing shelter and food for all living creatures. However, an angelic being ordered that the tree be cut down, leaving only a stump bound with iron and bronze. This dream perplexed the king, and he consulted Daniel, a prophet of God, to interpret it. Daniel revealed that the tree was the king himself, and he would be humbled for his pride until he acknowledged that “…the heavens do rule” (Daniel 4:26). A year later, being yet unrepentant, Nebuchadnezzar was struck with madness; for seven years, he lived like an animal, eating grass and roaming the fields. According to Daniel 4:17, this decree came from the “watchers”: “This matter is by the decree of the watchers, and the demand by the word of the holy ones: to the intent that the living may know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the basest of men.” The “watchers” here refer to angelic beings assigned to oversee matters on earth with authority to enforce God’s will. Nebuchadnezzar thought he ruled the world until he was compelled to acknowledge the rulership of the heavens. It’s the same today. Those who falsely claim absolute authority over others, operating under the delusion that their influence gives them control over the nations, don’t realize that true authority lies with God and His heavenly Kingdom. All power belongs to the Lord, and He executes His judgements on earth through the Church: “And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth” (Matthew 28:18). We enforce God’s will in our world: “All this energy issues from Christ: God raised him from death and set him on a throne in deep heaven, in charge of running the universe, everything from galaxies to governments, no name and no power exempt from his rule. And not just for the time being, but forever. He is in charge of it all, has the final word on everything. At the center of all this, Christ rules the church. The church, you see, is not peripheral to the world; the world is peripheral to the church. The church is Christ’s body, in which he speaks and acts, by which he fills everything with his presence” (Ephesians 1:20-23 MSG). Hallelujah! Plans for the funeral service of late Liverpool attacker Diogo Jota, along with his brother Andre Silva, have now been finalized. The funeral is scheduled to be held on Saturday at 10:00am in the Portuguese city of Gondomar. Initially, Father Jose Manuel Macedo, a local priest, had announced that the service would happen at 4:00pm on Friday. However, Father Macedo later changed this arrangement and confirmed the funeral would instead take place on Saturday morning. According to information published by the UK Mirror, the shift in timing arose from minor documentation challenges that must be properly handled before the family of the deceased can proceed with repatriating the remains. Prior to the funeral mass on Saturday morning, a wake will take place at the Sao Cosme Chapel. Following this vigil, the final funeral mass will occur at the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar, a Catholic parish church located adjacent to the chapel. Diogo Jota, aged 28, sadly passed away after being involved in a car crash during the early hours of Friday. At the time of the tragic accident, he was travelling in Spain together with his brother Andre Silva. The heartbreaking loss has sent shockwaves through the football community, and supporters are expected to gather in large numbers to pay their final respects to the talented player and his brother.

Troops attached to Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) on Wednesday apprehended two individuals suspected of being armed, during a well-coordinated security patrol designed to counter rising criminal activities within Benue State. The arrest took place along major access corridors leading into Makurdi, the state capital, as part of ongoing security measures. The two suspects were later identified as Mr. Felix Agbako, aged 42, a farmer who hails from Abiam Village in Gwer East Local Government Area, and Mr. Tsekaa Kyaan, also aged 42, a driver residing in Tse-Adam Village within Makurdi Local Government Area. This coordinated patrol mission formed part of persistent efforts by security forces to dismantle unauthorized roadblocks and to disrupt the mobility of armed criminals operating within the troops’ designated Area of Responsibility (AOR). While conducting a thorough stop-and-search procedure, the security personnel discovered an AK-47 assault rifle accompanied by a magazine loaded with 7.62mm special ammunition. Both the firearm and ammunition were cleverly concealed within a blue Toyota Camry with registration number Lagos FST 733 GL. The mission was executed under the operational oversight of Captain Miri-Dashe from the 401 Special Forces Brigade, who received strategic support from Captain Iyamba during the operation. The exercise was carried out through the collaboration of multiple security agencies, including officers from the Department of State Services (DSS), Keystone operatives, as well as the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). Presently, both arrested suspects, alongside the seized weaponry, are being held in custody pending the outcome of further investigation and legal processes as stipulated by relevant security authorities. In response to this successful mission, the Force Commander of OPWS, Major General Moses Kolo Gara, praised the promptness and professionalism displayed by the security team throughout the operation. Major General Gara also reiterated the consistent commitment of Operation Whirl Stroke towards eliminating criminal elements and enhancing the safety and security of communities across Benue State and adjoining areas.
